The legendary coach won six state titles at four different schools, an accomplishment unprecedented in Georgia State basketball. David, who died in his home on the island of St. Simons in Georgia, left an indelible mark in basketball. Boyd, the oldest of three boys, grew up in Georgia. He was also an active member of the Campbell High School basketball and football teams. David Boyd died of heart failure at the age of 69 at his home in Georgia, surrounded by his family. Namely, he was dealing with type 1 diabetes for a long time. The condition eventually caused heart failure, which resulted in the coach’s death. He is survived by his wife Genise, brother Cal and four children: Charisse, Geoff, Christina and Wesley.
Cal, his brother, currently serves as the head coach at Mt. Bethel, Georgia, continuing his coaching legacy. However, David left a void in Georgian basketball that will be difficult to fill. He was the heart and soul of his teams, winning trophy after title while establishing standards of discipline and lifestyle.

David’s death was received by athletics fans with great sadness and horror, which may be a reflection of his fame. Tributes to the great coach and expressions of support for his family flooded social media. His brother Cal announced X’s death in an emotional message that reflected on his contributions to the family and basketball. “My big brother, David Boyd, went to be with the Lord today. He was an excellent mentor to many. The coaching world lost a legend today! I appreciate all our conversations over the years. “I already miss my brother a lot!”
Cal, a two-time national championship-winning coach, had a unique relationship with the late David. The coach-brother pair is equally unusual in basketball. Needless to say, having a big brother like David to learn from helped Cal greatly in his ambitions. To showcase his winning attitude and killer instinct, current Georgia State coach Jonas Hayes provided some pleasant remarks.
“He is an amazing coach and disciplinarian. “And he’s the epitome of a winner.”
Furthermore, Jermaine Sellers, former Boyd player and current head coach at Kell High School, revealed David’s personality traits.
“He discussed work ethics, responsibility, moral integrity and how to respect others. During my coaching career, he always accompanied me, gave me advice and encouraged me.”
Without a doubt, David was a famous coach with unparalleled achievements. Above all, he served as an inspiration to his family and the athletes who followed him.
