Death of Ala. Inmate Days from Freedom Under Investigation After Family Claims He Was Drugged, Raped, Beaten

Daniel Terry Williams, 22, was scheduled to leave 14 days after the alleged attack at the Staton Correctional Facility

An inmate at an Alabama prison has died in an attack 14 days before his scheduled release in which he was allegedly drugged, raped, beaten and left brainless, according to reports.

Daniel Terry Williams, 22, died days after a “possible inmate-on-inmate assault,” which occurred Oct. 22 at the Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore, Alabama, the Alabama Department of Corrections confirmed to PEOPLE.

His family members claimed police initially told them he died of a drug overdose, WVTM 13 reports.

Amber Williams, Daniel’s fiancee, told the newspaper that when she went to visit him, “he had bruises all over his arm, like down to his fingers.”

“He had cuts up and down and bruises on his legs. And it was bad,” she said.

A GoFundMe set up by Williams’ father’s employer claimed he had been severely assaulted and announced his death on Thursday.

“This baby was beaten, tortured and sexually assaulted by a group of people at Staton Prison with only 14 days to go until his release,” reads the fundraiser, which has raised more than $10,000.

After the attack, when he was taken to the hospital, medical staff determined he was brain dead from his injuries, according to GoFundMe.

“The pipe is out. He’s still brain dead and won’t be coming back after that,” reads the fundraising news release. “He’ll be moved to a room where he’ll be comfortable for the time he’s with us.”
