Debbie Allen Teases Catherine Facing 'Real Challenges' on Grey's Anatomy: 'Couldn't Even Keep a Dry Eye' (Exclusive)

Debbie Allen knows that things will be anything but smooth sailing for her character Catherine Grey’s Anatomy.

In the Season 21 premiere of the hit ABC medical drama, Catherine confronted Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) after she released her from the hospital along with Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd ). ) for their involvement in secret Alzheimer’s research.

Later in the episode, Meredith realizes Catherine’s cancer is progressing and she needs further treatment, but Catherine tells her to “keep her mouth shut” and not tell her son Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) or husband Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr .) about her condition.

Allen, 74, told PEOPLE at the 35th Annual Angel Food Awards Gala in Hollywood on Saturday, September 28, that the hurdles are not over for Catherine.

“Mrs. “Catherine is going to go through some real challenges with her health and understanding her leadership role in the medical world she lives in,” she teased.

The actress said the show was “so dynamic”, adding: “I wish I could tell you, but I’m telling you, week in and week out we’re laughing out loud, we’re crying. We’re going to make the world care, what’s that Grey’s Anatomy it always has been.”

“We are following a trail that [creator] Shonda Rhimes left us,” she continued. “Now we have an amazing host, Meg Marinis…She’s amazing. So we collaborate, but we can also see where we’re going, and we’re all there.”

As for what fans can expect from the rest of the season, Allen teases that it’s an emotional rollercoaster ahead.

“This season, I’m just telling you, I just directed this episode. I directed four, I read seven and I just couldn’t even keep my eyes open,” she shared.

Allen — who was presented with the Humanitarian Angel Award during the annual event — also spoke about the impact of the Angel Food Project, which is dedicated to nurturing “the health and spirit of vulnerable people facing critical and life-threatening illnesses by preparing and delivering medically tailored meals with love , with care and dignity”, the organization’s mission states.

“The Angel Food Project is one of the most important non-profit organizations on this planet because it recognizes and works hard every day to serve those in need, to share from the haves to the have-nots,” she explained. “And people shouldn’t be starving on this planet, especially not here in the United States.”
