Denzel Washington seems to have mapped out the rest of his acting career.
While Washington (69) was promoting his new film, Gladiator IIduring an appearance on Australia’s Today show on Monday, November 11, the actor said Black panther screenwriter and director Ryan Coogler intends to create a role for Washington in the Black Panther 3.
“For me, it’s about being a director. Especially at this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best,” Washington said when asked if he felt the “pressure” of making a sequel in the 2000s. Gladiatorwhich won five Oscars.
“I don’t know how many more movies I’m going to make. Probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done. I played Othello at 22; I’m about to play Othello at 70,” he said, referring to his upcoming Broadway performance in Shakespeare Othello with Jake Gyllenhaal. “After that I play Hannibal. After that I talked to Steve McQueen about the movie. After that Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black panther.”

During that interview, Washington added that he also intends to star in a film adaptation Othello and act in another Shakespeare production, King Learbefore retiring from acting.
Marvel Studios has not officially announced a third Black panther the film is in development. The film series last brought comic book fans to the fictional African country of Wakanda in 2022. Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverin which most of the cast from the original 2018 film returned to tackle — both on and off screen — the original series leading up to Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020 at the age of 43 from colon cancer.

In that film, Letitia Wright’s character, Shuri, takes up the mantle of Black Panther; the final moments of the film also reveal that Boseman’s character, T’Challa, and Nakia Lupita Nyong’o have a son, also named T’Challa.
Wright, 31, said Diversity at the 2023 Golden Globes, she stated that a third Black Panther movie is “already in the works,” though she said she believed it would be some time between the sequel and the third installment. Marvel has yet to confirm any movies that will come out after the fourth and fifth The Avengers films that will be released in May 2026 and May 2027.

Washington’s potential addition Black panther series would mark a kind of full-circle moment for him and Boseman. Although the pair have never acted together on screen, Boseman revealed in June 2019 that Washington once “charmingly and privately” paid for him and a number of his fellow Howard students to attend a summer acting program at the University of Oxford in England.
“There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington,” Boseman recalled to the audience as he presented Washington with an American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award.
