Warning: This story contains spoilers for Part 2 Yellowstone season 5
The Dutton family continues to uncover the secrets behind the death of their beloved patriarch.
On Sunday, November 24, a new episode of the series YellowstoneThe final chapter revealed how John Dutton, Kevin Costner’s character, died — and saw justice at least partially meted out to the person behind his murder.
Fans and the Dutton family themselves were suspicious when John died, and his death was ruled a suicide on the Nov. 10 season 5B premiere, as he appeared to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his own home, and now they finally have answers as to exactly patriarch killed.

Season 5B’s third episode continued with the season’s dual timelines as it was revealed how John was murdered in his home — and where all the rest of the family was at the time. After the power cut in the home, John was strangled in bed by a group of masked men and dragged into the bathroom, where a drug was injected between his toes, which rendered him completely unconscious. The men planted a vial of oxycodone nearby and shot him in the head to finish the job, leaving the gun in John’s hand to stage the death as a suicide.

Both Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) are overcome with emotion and immediately know their father is dead.
In the present timeline, Kayce continues to fight to have John’s death investigated as the family does not believe it was a suicide, and they finally get their way as the medical examiner overrules the death as a suicide and it is now being investigated as a homicide.
The investigation is bad news for Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), who is responsible for hiring the hitmen to kill John, and the episode ends with a fight between her and Jamie (Wes Bentley) that prompts her to storm off and drive away. Then, almost out of nowhere, she was shot in the head by a car that stopped next to her and asked her name.

Why Kevin Costner left Yellowstone? Inside the actor’s decision to walk away from John Dutton — and how it affected the patriarch’s story
Justice has now been at least partially served for John Dutton – although the Dutton family is not sure how far they will go in their revenge – but it is still unlikely that Costner, 69, will get involved.
After the season 5B premiere, Costner revealed that he learned of his character’s fate with the rest of the world, as he was not involved in the series’ final installment and “didn’t realize” it had already premiered.

“I heard it was a suicide, so that doesn’t make me rush to see it,” Costner said on SiriusXM Program by Michael Smerconish. “I mean, I was seeing ads with my face all over the place and I thought, ‘God, I’m not in that.’ I’m not in this season.”
He continued: “I was focused on what I needed to do and I have a few calls to make. So you think – sometimes I’m just a passenger in my life, you know, there’s a lot going on And someone said, you know, it was playing last night, and I said, ‘Hmm, okay?’ So no, I found out about it this morning.”

When Michael Smerconish said John Dutton didn’t really seem “suicidal,” Costner weighed in on what he thought might happen next. “Well, they’re pretty smart people. Maybe it’s a red herring. who knows. They are very good. And they will figure it out.”
