Donnie Wahlberg Jokes About Getting Cast as Tom Selleck’s Son on Blue Bloods: ‘How am I This Dude’s Son?’

Donnie Wahlberg wasn’t sure if he would be cast as Tom Selleck’s on-screen son Blue blood.

In the episode from Friday Brotherly love, Wahlberg spoke with hosts and brothers Joey Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence and Andrew Lawrence about his career and the current CBS hit series. The 54-year-old actor shared his first impression of landing the role of Det. Danny Reagan, son of New York Police Commissioner Tom Selleck Francis “Frank” Reagan.

“They hired me on the show i [Selleck] he was very excited because he was a fan Family of brothers, so he was like, ‘Oh yeah, this guy’s good,'” Wahlberg told the Lawrence brothers. “But I walked into the room and he’s about 6’4, I’m about 5’11,” I think.”

“So I walked in and I was like, ‘Oh my God, he’s got so much hair, his eyebrows are so bushy,'” the actor joked about his on-screen father’s very different appearance. “I didn’t even care about the mustache.”

“I was like, ‘How am I this guy’s son?'” the New Kids On The Block singer joked. “I thought, ‘I’m going to be fired tomorrow.'”

But after that moment of apprehension, Wahlberg met Len Cariou, who plays his grandfather Henry Reagan on the show, and felt much more at ease. “He’s shorter than me, with the same hair,” the actor joked. “I said, ‘Okay, I have his genes. I’m good.'”

He also shared how he was first surprised that the series was picked up in 2010. The series — which ends with its 14th season — was originally titled Reagan’s lawand Wahlberg’s agents told him it wasn’t “picked up.”

Wahlberg explained that he had that conversation while traveling with the members of New Kids On The Block on their annual cruise. “I thought, okay, I’m going to go on a great cruise with my fans and the New Kids; we will have a good time, everything is fine”, he said.

“And then somewhere in the middle of the ocean on Saturday or Sunday, my agent says, ‘You have to go to your cabin, the agent is trying to call you,'” he recalled. “She said, ‘Can you be in New York tomorrow? You are in the show called Blue bloodand that was picked up.'”

“I thought, ‘When this ship comes into port, I’m getting on the first plane. I’m going to be there,'” Wahlberg said.
