refuse to accept degree

In 2018, students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences protested against the institute’s management’s decision to cancel financial aid to SC, ST and OBC students who were eligible for the Government of India Post-Master’s Scholarship (GoIPMS). During the graduation ceremony, more than 400 students protested, nine of whom refused to accept their degrees, and 300 students wore badges to protest against the government. Fahad Ahmed was one of the nine students who refused to accept a Master of Philosophy degree from the university’s chairman.

The management claimed that Fahad’s behavior was an insult to the university and refused him registration for the PhD programme. Commenting on this in an interview, Ahmed said the institute had “caved in to the agenda set by the government” and said,

We had 9 students, most of whom were from reserved categories, refusing to collect their degrees, and over 300 students wearing badges in protest. This issue could have been easily resolved if the institute had shown determination to seek funds from the Tata Trusts. For an institution that handles transactions of crores of rupees, Rs 2 crore is a pittance. “

Fahd said when talking about the doctorate in an interview,

I was denied registration because I was fighting for social justice, and even though other student government members left, I didn’t give up the fight. I am deprived of a quality education because even now it is easy to target Muslims and because asking questions and expressing opinions is not allowed in this country. I was denied registration because I questioned TISS and the country’s undeclared emergency. As the government delayed our JRF forms, I and several other students faced punishment for participating in the protests. But we are in this fight together. “
