He breathed his last on December 28, 2013, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Farooq made his acting debut with MS Sathyu’s 1973 film Garam Hawa in his final year of law school.
His active years in the theater industry made him well-known among directors such as Sagar Sarhadi, who later directed his films Noorie (1979), Bazaar (1982) and Faasle (1985). Farooq also acted in hit films such as Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan (1981) and Jaman (1978), Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khilari” (1977), Syed Paranjap’s “Chasme Buddor” (1981) and “Kesha” (1982) and JK Bihari’s “Biwi Ho Toh Aisi” (1988)).

Apart from acting, Farouk is also socially active and believes in helping the underprivileged in the community. After the Gujarat riots in 2002, he contributed to the reconstruction of the victims of the riots in his hometown. He also financed the education of the two sons of a maintenance worker at the Taj Mahal hotel who was shot dead in Mumbai in 2008 after reading about it in the Indian Express during the 26/11 terrorist attack.
