What is a treasure map?
Treasure Maps are a somewhat lucrative side content that works like this: You decipher an ancient treasure map in your inventory and it gives you an enlarged map tile with an X on it, true pirate style.
First, if you’re using the treasure maps yourself, you’ll need to complete the Treasures and Tribulations quest to get the action to interact with them. This will allow you to unscramble (right-click > unscramble) the map and dig for treasure once you find the location.
Decrypted maps are found in the key items section of the inventory. You find out where in the overworld this place is and dig for treasure there (“/ac dig” or put it in your shortcut bar). A treasure chest appears, you try to open it, a horde of monsters attack you, you defeat them, and then you open the chest and get some unlikely rewards.
For some types of maps, it’s also possible to spawn a portal that takes you and your party to a fabulous treasure dungeon where you can get even more stuff. The highest level map currently available is the old Zonureskin map at level 80, which has a chance to spawn a portal to the Lyhe Ghiah dungeon.
Go ahead, more bets!
What are the treasure hunt rewards?
Treasure hunting is profitable. It is an exclusive source of some minions, decorations, and crafting materials for making amulet equipment. It is also a good source of materials, Crackling Clusters, Elemental Crystals, and Clusters. You will also get some gil, tomestones, and intermediate crafting materials. Some of these items can only be found after reaching the upper floors, so you’ll have to get lucky.
Disappointed, here I go!
In the Lyhe Ghiah dungeon, the highest level treasure dungeon, you’ll find Clockwork Fuath Minions, Stuffed Fuath Tabletop Decorations, Insatiable Orchestral Rolls, and fascinating Indigo Cloth and Fireglass Leather crafting materials. Indigo Cloth is also a potential reward for defeating chest armor enemies before entering the dungeon portal.
The older dungeons still have some exclusive drops, mostly housing items, orchestra scrolls, amulet crafting materials, and emotes. You can also earn some titles from various treasure hunts. These can be found under Achievements > Combat > Scavenger Hunt.
Where do I get maps?
Treasure Maps are tradable, so you can buy them on the market at any time. If you want to catch them yourself, you’ll need an advanced botanist or a miner. These maps have a chance to appear as hidden items when you collect from level 80 nodes (visible from level 75).
You can collect a map every 18 hours, which you can track from your timer menu. My favorite place to get a quick Zonureskin map is north of Fort Job in Lakeland as a miner, or south of Tomla in Kholusia as a botanist.
Remember, these items are unique, so you can only have one of each in each inventory slot. I keep a decryption on my key items, one in my inventory, the chocobo saddlebag, and my two followers’ inventory.
The old Zonureskin map comes from a level 80 node that can open the portal to the Lyhe Ghiah dungeon.
The Old Gazelle Skin map comes from a level 70 node and can open a portal to the Lost Canal of Uznair or the Moving Altar of Uznair.
The old rebel map comes from two Uznair dungeons that drop portals into Uznair’s hidden channels.
The ancient dragon skin map comes from a level 60 node and can open the portal to the city of water.
Also worth noting is the non-hidden leather map, which drops from treasure maps
Where is the treasure chest?
to here. Fight monsters. Get the loot.
Clicking on the cracked map will open a larger area map showing ethereum, allowing you to easily teleport to the area. If you’re not too good at finding treasure chests from cracked map fragments, here’s a website with maps of possible chest locations for various treasure maps.
How many people do I have to take?
A team of four level 80 players can run through the Lyhe Ghiah dungeon, but the more people in the group, the more comfortable and fluid it will be. Obviously, you’ll probably have to compete with more people for the rolling loot, but maybe those people will also bring their own maps so they have a better chance of finding the dungeon first.
There is a section in Party Finder called Treasure Hunt where you can create or join a party and find people from the same world to complete this content. The typical etiquette I’ve seen (at least in Light DC in the EU) is that everyone brings a map or two, and you go through them hoping to spawn a portal to the dungeon.
I prefer FFA (free-for-all) parties where everyone can roll needs on everything, but sometimes you also see “owner’s needs” parties where only the owner of the current map you’re on needs to roll while everyone else others roll eagerly. Just be sure to write down what kind of party it is before you start.
It’s also worth mentioning that for old school treasure hunting dungeons like Aquapolis, your level won’t sync, but your ilvl will. The result is that you’ll keep all of the level 80 abilities and rotations, but still need a bunch or you’ll die. Real monsters from lower level treasure maps that you can easily defeat at higher levels.
Do you like the new treasure dungeon? What do you think of their exclusive items? Did you have good or bad luck with the drops? Let me know in the comments.
