Finn Wolfhard had a front row seat to stories of the early days Saturday night live courtesy of his legendary Ghostbusters: Frozen City costar, Dan Aykroyd.
On Thursday night, Wolfhard, 21, walked the red carpet at the New York premiere of the 2021 sequel. Ghostbusters: Afterlife. At the screening, Stranger Things star revealed to PEOPLE that Aykroyd, 71, helped him prepare for his upcoming role SNL 1975 film, depicting the hours leading up to the October 11, 1975 premiere of the NBC sketch comedy series.
“He told me stories just about how none of them were famous yet and there was a time when they were all normal people who were out in the world trying to make a living as comedians and just hearing about how Dan lived like a comedian guy before SNL and his everyday life,” Wolfhard tells PEOPLE, noting that “it was really amazing and very insightful.”
Wolfhard’s addition to SNL 1975 He was the first to announce the cast Deadline Tuesday. The actor is set to play an NBC page who tries to convince people to come see the network’s new sketch comedy series during its first live taping.

The It the actor added at the premiere that he is working alongside so many veteran comedy actors in the latest Ghost busters the film was “very surreal”. He tells PEOPLE, “You’ve watched them grow up and it’s amazing — you learn a lot from them and it feels like a dream for a long time, and then it becomes a job, which is crazy.”
SNL 1975The ensemble, meanwhile, also includes Dylan O’Brien as Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Nicholas Podany as Billy Crystal, Nicholas Braun as Jim Henson, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner and Matt Wood as John Belushi and Kai Gerber as Jacqueline Carlin.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wolfhard said that while his role in the film is small, he’s just excited to be part of the cast. “I’m not the main character, but just being part of the ensemble is a gift,” he said.
Wolfhard continued, “I’m so excited for people to see it. A lot of the interiors and stuff are going to be shot in Atlanta, but the other night we were shooting outside of 30 Rock, really on film, with a bunch of vintage cars with pictures from the ’70s. Looking at the top of 30 Rock while filming was the most surreal experience.”
SNL 1975 also serves as a reunion of sorts for the young actor, since it was written and directed by Jason Reitman, who also directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the writer is a producer on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Recording on SNL 1975 is currently in progress. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire premiere in theaters on March 22.
