Gabrielle Union Says Motherhood Later in Life Is ‘Worth It’: ‘I Became a Mom at the Right Time’

Gabrielle Union discusses the rewards of motherhood later in life.

The actress, 50, said in an Instagram video posted Friday that she “became a mom at the right time” and shared that she was able to “heal” the traumas of the past and not pass them on to daughter Kaavia James, 4.

“People always ask, ‘Is it worth it? Having children later in life? There’s a lot that goes into that answer,” Union said in the video as she stood in the dressing room applying cream. “But in short: hell yes, it was worth it.”

Union welcomed Kaavia via surrogate in November 2018 with husband Dwyane Wade, 41, after the couple tied the knot in 2014. The actress is also stepmother to Wade’s children, Zaire, 21, and Zaya, 16, who he shares with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches and Xavier, 9, with Aja Metoyer.

“He has changed my life in so many wonderful ways that I wish I had done it sooner, just to have more time with Kaav. I even have more time as a mom,” Union continued.

A perfect find The star then reflected on the timing of her journey to motherhood, saying, “I became a mom at the right time, because I was healed.”

“I committed to eternal healing, too, so I didn’t pass all that generational trauma onto Kaav,” Union said. “And if I was a day younger, even certainly 10, 15, 20 years ago, I would have passed on too many traumatic things to my child.”

“I wasn’t really into healing all my traumas, healing my soul, healing my aura, if you will. I wasn’t in a place to take care of myself, let alone our little miracle – the actress admitted.

“So for me, it’s absolutely worth it. She is the best thing that ever happened to me,” Union concluded with a smile.

“Choosing to heal past traumas was the best preparation for motherhood @theproudlyco,” Union added in the caption for a post she shared in collaboration with PROUDLY, her baby care brand she founded with her husband, Wade.

In March, Union opened up about her role as a mother at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards following her and husband Wades’ emotional speech at the NAACP Image Awards in the fight for LGBTQ rights.

The speech came a day after Zaya legally changed her name and underwent gender reassignment.

“Your children are worth fighting for,” he told Union with Extra in that time. “Your children are not disposable, even when faced with something you may not be so familiar with or comfortable with [it is] is no excuse to throw away your children.”

“It makes you fight,” she said. “It makes you dig deep and not just fight for your kids, but everybody’s kids.”
