Gavin Rossdale Says He ‘Feels Bad for His Kids’ After Going Through Gwen Stefani Divorce: ‘Quite Debilitating’

Gavin Rossdale opens up about how his divorce from Gwen Stefani affected the former couple’s children.

While appearing in this week’s episode Amy & TJ podcast with Amy Robach and TJ Holmes, frontman Bush (58) commented on navigating his divorce from Stefani, with whom he shares sons Kingston (17), Zuma (15) and Apollo (10). Rossdale is also father to daughter Daisy, 34, from a previous relationship.

Saying he “never thought he’d get a divorce,” the singer said he doesn’t want his children to go through the same experience he did.

“I feel sorry for my kids, that’s it,” Rossdale said. “I wish I could have found a way to keep that out of their lives. It wasn’t fun for me to come from a broken home…it can be pretty draining on kids…the most important thing is I don’t want to let my kids down.”

While he didn’t specifically name Stefani, the father of three added: “The biggest thing would be when you see the kids, sometimes there’s a loss. It would be nice if there was more of a connection with the person who created them with me.”

“I’ve been to a lot of events that have been ‘the other team,’ so to speak, and I feel very proud of myself in my consistency as a father,” Rossdale says, seemingly referring to Stefani and her husband, Blake Shelton. “I know in my heart that I’m super consistent.”

However, Rossdale noted that he doesn’t feel comfortable saying anything negative about his ex.

“To say the least, he got better as soon as possible, and I didn’t say anything,” explained the divorce. “I’m bound because I would never want to say anything overly negative about their mom. It’s just not right.”

In November, Rossdale spoke to PEOPLE on set Conversation‘s Halloween episode and shared that his son Apollo is already taking after his parents.

“Apollo sang me a song for his show last night,” Rossdale began, “and it’s really upsetting because I based my tour on his [flag] football season.”

“He’s a quarterback. He’s really good. When we booked the tour, I said, ‘Well, I have to stay in LA until this date because I can’t miss it,'” Rossdale told PEOPLE. “I knew it would mess something up, but I was determined not to miss him.”

“I missed a game last season, the last game of the season, the playoffs. It was devastating. I had to watch her on FaceTime. I booked my tour around her and I knew she was going to give something.”

“He fucking took the lead in his own game and I don’t come back until the ninth and he’s first. Anyway, he sang me a song last night and it was amazing from top to bottom and just beautiful pitch, melody, voice, tone , I knew all the words.”

“I was shocked. It’s great,” added the proud dad.
