Georgia Man Finds Help for 4 Starving Puppies After Discovering the Dogs Dumped in His Truck

A trip to the gym turned into a rescue mission for a Georgia man.

According to Newsweekafter a recent evening visit to his Brookhaven gym, Alex Towers returned to his vehicle in the garage outside the facility to find four emaciated Dogo Argentino puppies abandoned in the bed of his pickup truck.

The revelation shocked Towers, but it didn’t slow him down. Instead of returning home from his trip to the gym, Towers sought professional canine help because he could tell from the puppies’ bulging ribs that the little animals needed medical attention.

After making a few calls, Towers and his girlfriend found an animal hospital that was open late into the night and they could see the puppies. The care of the puppies was taken over by the Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) hospital. After the animals were settled in the hospital, VEG reached out to a rescue that he knew was well-suited to provide the canines with long-term help: DC Dogos Rescue.

DC Dogos is a Florida-based organization that helps find homes for rescued Dogo Argentinos across the country.

“We’re one of the few Dogo Argentino rescues. We rescue dogs from all over the country and Puerto Rico, and then we rehome them all over the U.S. so that’s what people usually call us,” Pamela Fay, CEO of DC Dogos Rescue, tells PEOPLE about hearing from of VEG. “We happened to have a foster nearby who was able to pick them up the next morning from that clinic, and then he stayed with them for a few days, and then another volunteer drove the puppies to Tampa.”

According to a Facebook post by DC Dogos, the four puppies found in Towers’ truck were transported to the rescue’s farm in Florida on February 10. A small litter consists of two males and two females. The dogs were estimated to be 8 weeks old when they arrived at the rescue.

“They’re doing great,” Fay says of the puppies, one of which has already found a temporary home.

“The guy who drove them actually fell in love with one of the girls and ended up adopting her,” says the rescue director.

Unfortunately, these four abandoned puppies are not the only abandoned dogs DC Dogos has seen this year. Fay says that shortly after the Georgia dogs arrived, two more Dogo Argentino puppies were found abandoned in Atlanta.

“Someone saw them from the sidewalk, from the side of the road. It’s clear they were just dumped there; they were the same age, eight weeks old. We’re thinking, maybe they’re from the same group or litter,” Fay shares.

All six newcomers have been to the vet since landing at DC Dogos and are expected to recover from the neglect they suffered at an early age. All dogs should be dewormed and put on a nutritious diet. The puppies showed remarkable progress after a few days of dedicated care.

“They’re playful, very funny, good eaters, poop everywhere,” Fays says of how the Great Dane puppies are now. “They’ve had their shots, they’re eating well and they’re as playful as can be. We’re very happy to see that because we didn’t know if they’d be scared puppies based on how they’d been handled before.”

DC Dogos accepts applications for puppy adoption, although the young dogs are not yet ready to go to forever homes. Fay says the rescue is waiting for the puppies to make a full recovery before moving them to new families.

If you’re looking to adopt a Dogo Argentino puppy, Fay encourages a lot of research before making a decision because dogs “require a lot of stimulation and exercise.”

“One day of Googling is not enough. You have to talk to people with the breed. You have to come to us for advice,” Fay says of how she wants potential adopters to move forward.

“This breed used to be quite rare, but they have become increasingly popular, especially after they were recognized by the AKC a few years ago,” she adds. “They’re some of the cutest puppies ever, so people want to get them and then they realize they’re too much. It’s a beautiful breed, but they’re just not for everyone. And that’s why we usually see them discarded a lot after they reach maturity.”
