News about Grant Tinker

Grant Tinker, the famed producer and executive who founded MTM Enterprises with Mary Tyler Moore and later took on the challenge of taking NBC from last to first, has died. He was the former president and CEO of NBC. He was 90 years old.

Tinker died Monday at his Los Angeles home. The story first broke on NBC’s “Today” show on Wednesday.

According to NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke, “Grant Tinker was a great man who left an indelible mark on the history of NBC and television that continues to this day.” “He protected and valued creative people, while at the same time running the company finely. Only a small number of people have been able to achieve this balance. We strive every day to uphold the standards he set.

Death at 90 of Grant Tinker, respected former head of NBC and MTM

From its inception through the 1990s, Tinker’s stylish and likable television career spanned nearly 50 years. From “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” to “Lou Grant,” “WKRP in Cincinnati” to the dramatic home run “Hill Street Blues,” he’s generally taken the right path on most of his projects. As a producer and executive, he had a remarkably conflict-free working relationship in a field rife with behind-the-scenes deals.

Sons Mark and John Tinker, two of Tinker’s four children, work as producers and directors in the television industry.

In his roles as a television executive and father, my father set the bar high. I have only heard others speak of him with respect and admiration.

“Chicago PD” Executive Producer Mark Tinker said, “I am delighted to be his son and I am especially proud of the legacy he left in business and as a gentleman.

Tinker was known on NBC for his catchphrase: “First be the best, then be the first.” Sticking with shows like “Cheers” and “Hill Street Blues,” even as they were near the bottom of the Nielsen ratings, Tinker and his famed head of programming, Brandon Tartikoff, put that maxim to work.

Hiring the best creatives and letting them work independently of the suits was Tinker’s guiding principle. He was the employer of several modern multi-hyphenate, including James L. Brooks and Steven Bochco.

After a stint as a studio executive, he went on his own in 1969. He founded MTM Enterprises to produce a star vehicle for Moore, whom he married in 1962. Moore ran the organization, with Tinker as president.

“The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which made its television premiere on CBS that same year, was revolutionary in its complexity and in the way it portrayed a woman’s work. After Tinker hired two of the best writers in the business, Brooks and Allan Burns, the show became a highlight every season for the next seven years, earning 67 Emmy nominations and winning 29, including three for Outstanding Comedy Series.
