After graduating in 1997, Gregory R. Wiseman reported to Naval Aviation School Command, Florida (NAVAVSCOLSCOM or NASC), where he received fighter flight training. In 1999, he completed training to become a naval pilot. Reed revealed in an interview that he developed a passion for becoming a naval pilot at an early age because he often watched the aerial acrobatics performed by the U.S. Navy’s “Blue Angels.” That same year, he was assigned to Fighter Squadron 101 at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. There he learned to fly the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. In 2000, he was transferred to the 31st Fighter Squadron at Oceana. He later deployed to the Middle East, flying combat air missions under Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom; against the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. In 2003, Reed was assigned to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (NTPS) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, where he underwent test pilot training courses until June 2004. Following the course, he was assigned to Naval Air Station Maryland as a test pilot and program officer for Aviation Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23). In 2006, Reed was selected as one of the test pilots for the Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning II, a fifth-generation U.S. fighter jet. Thereafter, Gregory R. Wiseman was selected as a test pilot for new models of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet and McDonnell Douglas T-45 Goshawk.

He was later assigned as a strike operations officer with Air Wing 17 on the USS Nimitz and deployed to South America. In 2009, he was assigned as a McDonnell Douglas F/A-18F Super Hornet pilot with Strike Fighter Squadron 103, stationed aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). In 2009, Gregory became a Navy Lieutenant. Later, he was promoted to the rank of captain.

From August 2009 to May 2011, he received astronaut training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Later, he was selected as a flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS). On May 29, 2014, he reported from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, from where he was launched to the International Space Station.
