Emergency services rushed to the scene at 10.50pm after receiving a call raising concerns for the child’s welfare.
Inside the house, the officers found a four-year-old boy who had sustained knife injuries.
He was rushed to the hospital, but soon died from his injuries.
A 41-year-old woman known to the boy was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is in custody.
The boy’s father, who is from the south east of Ireland, is understood to have planned a trip back to Ireland over the Christmas period to meet extended family.
Those living nearby have now revealed their shock at the young man’s death.
The mum-of-three, who lives in the area, said the boy was a “lucky boy”.
The 36-year-old told The Sun: “He was very energetic. I see him outside playing on his scooter.
“He was a happy kid. A very happy kid.”
The mum claimed she heard the woman screaming as the horror unfolded, before officers were seen leaving the house “crying and shaking”.
She added: “They couldn’t keep it down.
“It’s a shock to all of us here.”
Another resident who lives in the street said: “Last night we heard a commotion outside our window and went downstairs to lots of police cars and ambulances.
“People stood on the street and cried.
“We had no idea what was going on and the policeman told us to go back inside.
“We can’t believe what happened. We just found out.”
Forensic officers were seen entering the house this afternoon.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, who leads policing for Hackney and Tower Hamlets, said: “This is an extremely disturbing incident which will understandably cause shock and disbelief among the local community and those who were at the scene.
“We are working with our partners, including Hackney Council and the school community, to ensure support is available to people who need it.
“Specialist officers from our homicide team are progressing this investigation and continue to work to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of this young child and the events leading up to it.
“This incident took place at a home and, although there is no threat to public safety, additional officers will be present in the area as we are aware of the impact this will have on the community.”
This happened after a woman was killed nearby earlier this month.
