Heidi Klum doesn’t mind sharing a closet with her daughter.
At Prince William’s fourth Earthshot Awards on Wednesday, November 6, the 51-year-old supermodel said she feels “proud” when Leni, 20, breathes new life into pieces from her iconic wardrobe.
“I’m so excited to see my daughters wearing my clothes again,” Heidi tells PEOPLE at an event in Cape Town, South Africa. “My older daughter, she’s also a model, goes to events and when she wears Not only am I proud of my clothes, but we can rework them.”
In 2022, Leni borrows her mother’s silky black strapless dress from the 90s for her graduation party.
“Prom in mom’s dress 🖤,” the teenager wrote on the merry-go-round on Instagram ahead of the event. Heidi originally wore the dress in 1998 for a Comic Relief live comedy event and commented with a heart-with-eyes emoji on her daughter’s post.
“I’m giving clothes to my kids,” Heidi said on the Earthshot green carpet.
“… I think it’s also very important to keep wearing your own things. I think in the past we would wear something once and then never wear it again, and that’s very wrong,” she added. “I invite everyone to wear your amazing closet items. It’s the best store, your own closet.”

The Earthshot Prize is a global challenge based on five Earthshots – ambitious 2030 goals to tackle our biggest environmental problems. At the awards ceremony each year, five winners receive $1.2 million for their contribution to environmental protection. On the carpet, Heidi wore a vintage Halston one-shoulder dress in bright orange.

“I go to a lot of events, but this is probably one of the most important events I’ve been to,” Heidi said of the evening. “It’s incredible what [Prince William] did. I haven’t met him yet. I didn’t know I was on his radar and when his team called and asked if I could come, I immediately said yes.”
The America has talent The judge says that after “diving deeper” into environmental issues, she “learned so many new things.”

“Who knew sustainable fishing existed?” she says. “Tomorrow it is a great honor for me to go with him [Prince William] to this place to learn about sustainable fishing. I knew our waters were overfished and polluted and all these horrible things. But I didn’t know about sustainable fishing. I like that I can learn more things and I hope to be better in the future.”

Her children are what make her future so important, explains Heidi. “I have four children and I hope to be a grandmother one day, but what about my grandchildren? We have to think about our tomorrow,” she says.
She adds: “When I was a child, you already knew it was starting and that people were saying there was no climate change. I mean, open your eyes around you — it’s happening everywhere. There are so many places I’ve visited where they complain about these things and the flooding and everything that happens. Everyone needs to open their eyes, and since I’m here, my eyes are even more open.”
