In 12th standard, Hemant learned about the National School of Drama through a booklet attached to a letter, which belonged to his teacher. He decided to join NSD. Hemant told his parents about his dream of becoming an actor but his reaction was terrible. His parents wanted him to finish school and find a stable job. He said in an interview,
I come from a farmer’s family and have nothing to do with this industry. But somehow, in my school, I got this passion for acting. By chance, I came across an NSD manual and I felt like I was destined to do this. My parents were not supportive of this because acting was not a career that people were willing to accept at the time. But my father agreed and said I could only do it after completing my college degree. So, after completing my bachelor’s degree in chemistry, I began my journey in the entertainment industry. “
Hemant failed the NSD entrance exam the first time; however, in his second attempt, he passed the entrance exam. While studying at NSD, he met many famous Bollywood actors such as Pankaj Tripathi and Shyam Pathak (who played Popatlal in the popular sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah).
After completing his NSD course, Hemant came to Mumbai where he even bagged small roles in movies and TV shows. When talking about his struggle, he said:
I come from a peasant family. My grandparents had a lot of debt, so most of my parents’ income went toward paying off that debt. So this is a very unsettling situation for me. I cannot ask my parents for money to survive in Mumbai. After graduating from NSD, I came to Mumbai and tried to audition for as many roles as possible. “
