History Teacher, 46, Praises 2 Students Who Saved His Life After Suffering Cardiac Arrest: 'It’s Really Humbling'

A history professor is on the mend after being rescued by his students following a health ordeal at school.

Adam Compton went into cardiac arrest at the skate club he sponsors with his students at MacArthur High School in San Antonio, Texas, on Nov. 7, according to Cleveland 19 News.

According to reports, Compton, 46, began to feel “besides himself” while taking part in an ice-skating session with students, before passing out.

Student Aidan Anthony-Gonzalez told KSAT 12 that he and classmate Steven Amaro “ran for the AED [automated external defibrillator]” while 911 was called. Other students, meanwhile, found the school’s athletic trainer Amanda Boyd to help revive Compton, the release said.

Amaro, a high school senior, received his ADR-CPR certification just weeks before the terrifying ordeal, according to KSAT 12 .

“I opened everything, put pillows on him and then the paramedics came and I let them take over,” the teenager told the newspaper. “I never thought I’d have to do it personally because it’s something you don’t expect. And that happens once in a lifetime and it shouldn’t happen to anyone.”

Boyd told Cleveland 19 News about the incident, “I turned around [Compton] I went over and looked for a pulse but couldn’t find one and from there I knew he needed CPR.”

Amaro stated that Boyd administered the shock that “revived” Compton. Emergency medical help then arrived shortly after, and the pedagogue was placed in the intensive care unit.

Speaking to KSAT 12, Compton recalled, “I asked one of the students next to me, ‘How long have I been out?’ They said, ‘A couple of minutes.’ Then nothing after that, I woke up in the hospital.”

In the meantime, he was discharged from the hospital and returned to school. “I’m still considering how slim the chances were. It’s really humbling,” Compton told Cleveland 19 News.

And while the teacher has yet to return to skating, he told KSAT 12 he hopes to return soon.

“Not long after that we had Thanksgiving, and I think the thing that I continued to experience not long after that during that holiday was looking at my wife and kids and just thinking, ‘I almost didn’t have this,'” Compton said.
