Horror as mum-of-five, 34, killed by pet dog at home just weeks after daughter's heartbreaking death

A MUM of five has died after being mauled by her pet in her home just weeks after her daughter’s death.

Michelle Hempstead, 34, was attacked by the animal, which was not a banned breed, in Southend, Essex, last month.

The mother was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately she could not be saved and she died the next day.

An inquest heard today that Michelle suffered a “dog bite wound on her left upper arm”.

An autopsy revealed that her left axillary artery – the main artery to the arm – had been severed in a horrific act.

Multiple organ failure and hypovolemic shock – where severe loss of blood or other fluids prevents the heart from pumping enough blood – have also been cited as contributing causes.

Lincoln Brookes, senior coroner for Essex, adjourned a full inquest pending a criminal investigation.

Essex Police confirmed they were called to an address in Retort Close at 11.30pm on July 29.

Two dogs were seized, but one is not believed to be involved in the horror.

Authorities said both animals have now been “put away for destruction”.

A GoFundMe page has now been launched to help raise money for Michelle’s funeral.

Liah Smith, who launched the fundraiser, said: “Michelle wasn’t just a mother to five beautiful children, she was a daughter, a friend, a neighbour, a huge support system for those around her, but undoubtedly the kindest soul she crossed paths with.

“We are absolutely heartbroken by her absence and would like to do her justice by coming together as a community at this unfortunate time.”

Liah also said Michelle’s death was the second tragedy to hit her family after her first-born daughter passed away in June.

She added: “This departure was a terribly tragic moment for Michelle and her family.

“With something so harrowing going through they haven’t been able to come to a place of peace and within 5 weeks the family have also had to deal with the shocking death of Michelle, our hearts are broken and broken.”
