Redden was in Clark County Circuit Court where he was convicted of attempted battery with great bodily injury when the attack occurred.
He pleaded guilty to the crime in November and was arrested in December after failing to appear in court.
During the sentencing, his lawyer asked for his client to be released on probation, but Judge Holthus said: “I think it’s time for him to try something else.
“I can’t deal with that history,” she said of the two-time felon, according to a video recorded by CBS affiliate KLAS.
A commotion could then be heard as Redden rushed from his seat and threw himself at a wide-eyed Holthus who ducked for cover.
A nearby sheriff and clerk greeted Redden with equal force as the deranged criminal thrashed around the bench.
Redden managed to injure the marshal before he was finally tied up, the local newspaper reported.
The marshal was taken to the hospital where he is expected to recover from his injuries.
Holthus hit her head during the stretch, but was in good condition afterward, sources told KLAS.
In a statement, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson confirmed that Judge Holthus was not seriously injured.
“Thank God for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her marshal and her law clerk,” Wolfson wrote.
“Without that, the situation would have been much worse because this defendant has shown extremely violent behavior and I am convinced that there will be consequences.”
Redden was under investigation after he threatened to “break the kneecaps” of another man on April 23, the documents state.
Another judge ruled in May that he should pass a competency test and be sent to a state behavioral institution.
In October, a judge found Redden competent.
After Redden missed a scheduled court date, he was arrested in December and charged with new charges of battery and battery on a protected person after he allegedly seriously injured the victim, police said.
He was due in court Thursday for a hearing on those charges.
Redden pleaded guilty and was convicted of three felonies.
He spent time in prison for domestic violence in 2021, and was found guilty of assault three years earlier.
In 2015, he was convicted of attempted theft.
Redden previously appeared before Judge Holthus on charges of destruction of property, records show.
Judge Holthus was elected to her position in January 2019 after serving in the district attorney’s office for more than 27 years.
She had extensive experience with the Special Victims Unit where she sought justice for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.
