Sagar started training for boxing after completing his class 12th class. He started training under the guidance of coach Hitesh Deshwal at the Jawahar Bagh Stadium in Jhajjar, Haryana. In an interview, when Sagar’s coach Hitesh was asked about training, he said:
I told him (Sagar) that he needed to follow a strict regimen. Many students leave after improving their physical fitness. I told him if you’re serious about boxing you’re more than welcome, otherwise just leave. I would immediately punch him three or four times. He has a strong ability to withstand blows. I’d let him play them for 6-8 rounds. This helps strengthen his willpower and stamina. Sometimes he would fight a different fighter in each round, even eight rounds in a row. “
He continued,
He does special training three times a day. In the morning and evening, he would box and run. On hot afternoons when everyone was sleeping, he would tie a tire around his waist and run 10-15 kilometers near the canal. “

He subsequently participated in various boxing tournaments including the All India University Championships and the Khelo India University Games. He then trained at the national camp in Patiala. He came into the limelight in 2022 after defeating senior boxers Satish Kumar and Narender Berwal at the national trials in Patiala. In an interview, talking about beating boxers, he said:
Bhai sahib legend hain (Satish bhai is a legend). He has been the national champion since 2012 and became the first super heavyweight boxer to compete in the Olympics. Satish bhai sahib ne badhai diya, bahut achha laga…Unko dekh dekh ke bade huye hain boxing kingpin. “

- His interest in boxing began in 2015 when he read a newspaper article about a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao . In an interview, he said about this incident,
I was never a bright student and I was always looking for a way out. Then I saw this full page article about the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. I was inspired by reading about them.
