House of the Dragon Season 2 Teaser Promises That a ‘War Between Dragons’ Is Looming

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Dragon House Season 1.

A “bloody” war is coming to Westeros.

The first teaser for the second season of HBO The house of the dragon dismissed on Saturday, sparking a brutal and merciless war between the Targaryens and the Hightowers.

The action-packed teaser brought several familiar faces back to the screen — including Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) — as the tension between the two former best friends they peaked after the devastating finale of the first season.

Season 2 picks up after the tragic — and war-igniting — death of Rhaenyra’s son, Prince Lucerys “Luke” Velaryon (Elliot Grihault), at the hands of Alicent’s son, Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). Luke and his dragon fell to their deaths after the prince’s two dragons clashed, and the news of her son’s death — as well as the tragic miscarriage she suffered in the same episode — made Rhaenyra, who seemed more eager for peace than war after his father’s death, he craves blood.

In the teaser, Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) warns Rhaenyra of what’s to come as tensions rise between her and Alicent.

“There is no war so hateful to the gods as war between kin,” Rhaenys says as various clips from the season play out, including some intense battlefield footage. “And there is no war as bloody as a war between dragons.”

Alicent, whose son, Aegon II, ascended the throne after the death of King Viserys in the season one finale, against the late king’s wishes, has a slightly different perspective as the war rages around her.

“A war will be fought, many will die, and the victor will ascend to the throne in the end,” she says during the teaser, hinting at the harsh and brutal mindset she’ll have as she counsels her son, the cantankerous new king, about the battle.

Her father, however, admits guilt as he says at one point in the teaser that “mistakes were made in the hours following the death of King Viserys.”
