How Jeremy Allen White Really Feels About the Internet’s Lust for Him: ‘I’ll Take What I Can Get’ (Exclusive)

Jeremy Allen White is aware of the internet frenzy surrounding his heartthrob status – but that doesn’t make him any less surprised!

While talking to PEOPLE onIron Claw world premiere on Wednesday night, the 32-year-old actor responded to the internet’s lust for his character as a chef in Bearand an obsession with his toned physique, which was on display during several of his outings around Los Angeles.

“What do I say to the internet?” Bear the star asks before replying: “Thanks for watching. I don’t know, I’m flattered. It surprises me, really.”

“But I’ll take it!” White adds with a shrug. “I’ll take what I can get!”

The Hulu star has previously spoken about the attention he receives from fans vanity fair February that he “doesn’t pay too much attention to it”.

“My mom tells me what they’re saying on Twitter, which is nice,” he explained. “I’ve been acting since I was 18. I was in this show [Shameless] It was popular for 11 years, but then I didn’t get as much attention as I do now. I feel very lucky that everything went so gradually because I was already able to find my footing.”

“I feel really bad for a young actor or someone who just doesn’t have a lot of experience when they suddenly break through; in that case it might be more devastating,” he continued.

The actor — who shares daughters Ezer and Dolores with his now estranged wife Addison Timlin — added: “I probably wouldn’t have done as well if I was single or childless or just younger and dumber. If you don’t have a foundation outside of your career, it can be a lonely existence. ”

White plays Carmy, a classically trained chef struggling to take over his dead brother’s sandwich shop. There were articles, memes, and even The New Yorker cartoon devoted to the attractiveness of his character.

In May, White talked about getting in shape for his next role opposite Efron.

“Yeah, I eat all the time,” he said Esquire. “Like, never stopping. In the morning I’d have waffles, almond butter. In the middle of the day, I’d eat turkey patties and avocado all the time. It’s really gross. You’re trying to consume as much as you possibly can, and, to be honest, you don’t feel great. I’ve been training too, but, I don’t know, trying to get that big, that’s no way to live.”

He added about Efron: “Zac is a maniac. He’s so focused and knowledgeable about training, nutrition, all of that. In terms of physical transformation, I think he blew us all out of the water. She looks really amazing in this thing.”

Although Timlin was supportive of White’s second big break, the former couple filed for divorce in May after more than three years of marriage. When the couple was spotted hugging at their daughter’s soccer game in July, a source told PEOPLE that White and Timlin are “still separated, but getting along.”

“Things have settled down a bit,” the source added, noting that the separation has been “tough” for Timlin to “often be a single parent” while White is away on set filming his own projects.

“When Jeremy works, he feels emotionally drained,” the insider noted. “There is still great love between them.”
