Manipur women viral video
In July 2023, a video went viral on the Internet, showing two women being paraded naked through the streets by a group of men. The video was apparently taken on May 4 during ongoing ethnic clashes between Meiteis and Kukis, in which two Kuki women were stripped naked by men from another community and then paraded naked through B Phainom village in Kangpokpi District. The video sparked nationwide outrage, with many high-profile figures including politicians and celebrities condemning the action. In response to the gruesome video, Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh said the government was considering the “death penalty” for the perpetrators. Soon after the video went viral on social media platforms, the government issued a formal order to Twitter and other social media platforms directing them not to spread the viral video depicting two Manipur women marching naked.
A case of kidnapping, gang-rape and murder was registered at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district and Manipur police formed as many as 12 teams to nab the suspects. According to the police complaint, on the day of the incident, approximately 800 to 1,000 people armed with sophisticated weapons invaded the village of B. Phainom. They began destroying, looting property and setting fire to houses. The suspects behind these acts are believed to be associated with the May Tai organization. During the attack, five villagers, two men and three women, sought shelter in the forest to escape the violence. However, they were eventually rescued by the Nongpok Sekmai police team, intercepted and kidnapped by thugs and escorted to the police station. Tragically, one of the men was killed on the spot by thugs, and the three women were forced to strip naked and suffered horrific torture. One of them, a 21-year-old woman, was brutally gang-raped. When her 19-year-old brother tried to step in to protect her, he also died at the hands of violent thugs. Referring to the incident in Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a social media post,
The events in Manipur have left me heartbroken. The whole country is ashamed; such violence is a disgrace to the entire country and to every citizen. “

Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh, while informing the public about Hiradas’ arrest, wrote:
