Last night, hundreds of students gathered at the site, formerly Subway City, for the university’s Freshers’ Week party.
Police say they are looking for the driver of the car.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “We are investigating a number of people who have been injured after what is believed to be a deliberate drive into Birmingham this morning.
“We were called to Livery Street shortly after 3am following reports of a disturbance involving a group.
“The police came and five people were injured.
“One man was arrested on suspicion of committing fraud and is currently in custody, while the search for the driver and the car is still active.
“We are treating this incident as a targeted attack and today we are increasing our patrols in the area for security.
“We are asking anyone who saw what happened, and especially those who have photographs or video, to contact us via 101 or Live Chat quoting log 315 of October 4.
“We remain at the scene this morning while our investigation continues.”
West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “On arrival crews found five patients.
“The first patient, a male pedestrian, was helped by the emergency team with multiple serious injuries.
“He was taken to a major trauma center for further treatment and MERIT traveled on board to continue care en route.
“Four other men, also pedestrians, were treated by medics for potentially serious injuries and taken to hospital for further treatment.”
