Idris Elba is the proud father of two children: daughter Isan and son Winston.

The Luther the actor shares Isan with ex-wife Hanna “Kim” Nørgaard and Winston with ex-girlfriend Naiyana Garth.

Isan was born to Elba and Nørgaard on January 5, 2002.

Elba did a great job playing the girl’s dad while Isan was growing up. “Boys and girls are different, but you’re not as a parent,” he said Esquire UK about instilling the same values ​​and expectations in both of his children. “Dad’s advice is dad’s advice. I will not give my daughter different advice than my son because she is a girl.”

Isan, who is now a mental health advocate, has been open about her desire to follow in her father’s famous footsteps and make a name for herself in Hollywood. Elba added, “If you feel like you’re going to pass out, don’t… I’m just, like, really proud. I can’t help but be a dad.”

But Isan is no stranger to red carpets or star-studded movie premieres; she often joined her dad and his wife, Sabrina, at premieres including Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Beast. She even skipped prom to cheer on her dad when he played a DJ set at Coachella 2019.

While she always showed up to support her father, the couple also experienced typical father-daughter tensions — and some less typical ones, like when Isan auditioned to play his daughter in a movie Beastand I didn’t get the part.

Elba opened up about going through that experience together on iHeartRadio’s The Breakfast Club morning show, saying it was “great” but that it “came down to chemistry in the end” and that it “wasn’t right for the movie, oddly enough.”

After all, Isan hadn’t spoken to her dad “for about three weeks,” he admitted. But in the end they agreed. “She was very kind… I’m really proud of her for going through that, not getting the part, but still coming to the premiere,” Elba added.

Another choice that took Isan a moment to get behind? Her father being named the 2018 Sexiest Man Alive. Isan, who was excited that year to see who would take home the title, was initially not thrilled with the news. “I wake up in the morning and it’s my dad. I said, ‘This is not what I expected. As for what she’s up to right now, Isan is studying film and television production at New York University and is set to graduate in 2024. Winston Elba was born to Elba and Garth on April 17, 2014.

Winston’s nickname has a special meaning. It was named after Elba’s father, who died of lung cancer.

While he jokes that it can be a lot for his older daughter, Winston appreciates it. “My son, he gets it. But he’s still at that age where he likes to be cuddled,” Elba said.

Winston may not yet be able to grasp his father’s level of fame, but he fully understands that Elba is an actor — specifically, the voice of one of his favorites Sonic the Hedgehog characters, Knuckles.
