Increased stipend of JRF, SRF and scientific associate
UGC New Directive: University Grants Commission has increased the stipend for Junior Research Fellows (JRF), Senior Research Fellows (SRF), Research Associates I, Research Associates II and Research Associates III. This will provide a significant boost to the R&D ecosystem and facilitate researchers.
The government will have additional expenditures of approx. 725.00 crore rupees. As of January 1, 2023, the monthly fees for scientists at higher education institutions within the Ministry of Education will increase.

Monthly fees of JRF, SRF and research associates
As per the revised scholarship stipend, the JRF stipend has been increased to Rs 37,000 from Rs 31,000 while the SRF stipend has increased by 20%. Check the table to know the previous and revised monthly charges below:

Request to increase the scholarship for researchers
On 29 August 2022, the All India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA) requested the DST to increase fellowships for researchers, including JRFs, SRFs and research fellows, as well as automatic upgradation of fellowships every four years. Among the many demands were a 60% increase in stipends in line with rising inflation and institutional costs and an increase in non-NET stipends, which have remained at Rs 8,000 since 2006.
As per the revised scholarship stipend, the JRF stipend has been increased to Rs 37,000 from Rs 31,000 while the SRF stipend has increased to Rs 42,000. Research Associate 1 will get Rs 58,000, Research Associate -2 will get Rs 61,000 and Research Associate -3 – Rs 63,000.
