Accused of abuse and rude behavior
In October 2020, Erin was heavily criticized for abusing and verbally attacking a fashion editor named Kang Kook-hwa (according to Kang’s now-deleted Instagram post). In response, Erin issued an official statement on social media, apologizing for her inappropriate remarks and behavior. Her agency, SM Entertainment, also issued a statement expressing regret for the attention the matter has attracted. The controversy sparked a public outcry and sparked wider discussion about the “gapjil” culture prevalent in South Korean society. “Gapjil” refers to abusive behavior and bullying by individuals with higher authority or seniority. Many experts and spokespersons for various political movements in South Korea believe that public anger against Irene is related to the country’s efforts to address and reduce the “gapjil” problem. However, several stylists, dancers and makeup artists who have worked with Erin shared on social media that they had never encountered the rude behavior Erin reported. Later, Jiang Guohua also responded to the rumors circulating on the Internet and called on people to stop speculating. She also clarified that there was no financial settlement involved and that there was just a sincere exchange of apologies when they met again.
