Before Jon’s return to the NFL
Jon was the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders from 1998-2001 before returning to the NFL. From 2002 to 2008, he was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning. With Tampa Bay, he became one of the youngest head coaches to win a Super Bowl in Super Bowl XXXVII. He took a nine-year hiatus from coaching and worked as an analyst for ESPN until rejoining the Las Vegas Riders on January 6, 2006.

How did his parents meet?
Jon and Cindy first met in 1987 in Knoxville. John was a graduate student and Cindy was a cheerleader at the University of Tennessee. Eventually they started dating. They were in a long distance relationship while Jon began coaching in Missouri, Stockton and Santa Clara. Their wedding took place on July 6, 1991, and since then they have been inseparable. They became each other’s pillars of strength. Cindy Gruden worked as an aerobics instructor to supplement Jon’s income when he was just starting out.

Jayson is the nephew of former quarterback and football coach Jay Gruden. He was the head coach of the Washington Redskins for five years, from 2014 to 2019. During his tenure in the Arena Football League, he won four ArenaBowls.
