Coleen Rooney will soon be gracing our screens to tell her version of the events of the famous “Wagatha” story in a three-part documentary titled Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story.
In 2019, Wayne Rooney’s wife hit the headlines after her tweet – directed at Rebekah Vardy – went viral before she was quickly dubbed “Wagatha Christie”.

Uncovering one of Britain’s biggest tabloid stories of the last decade, it reveals how Coleen became an amateur internet detective to find an explanation for why private stories involving her and her family continued to appear in the media.

The three-part program will examine the circumstances leading up to her infamous Instagram post that broke the internet through to Coleen successfully defending herself in one of the UK’s most famous High Court defamation cases in recent years.
Like the case itself, it will explore how Coleen’s life has unfolded in the public eye for the past 20 years. We know her as one of the most famous British celebrities and the wife of England’s record-breaking soccer player Wayne Rooney.
Ahead of the launch, Coleen spoke to Vogue magazine on trial for the first. “It was so weird that first day, actually sitting together on the bench,” she said, talking about coming face to face with Rebekah in court.

“It was so hard in that courtroom, […] especially watching her in the stands. It was quite painful. I felt uncomfortable.” She later explained: “I’m a person who likes to forgive and forget, I can’t be bothered with things that happen and happen,” adding: “But this is obviously completely different.”
The defamation case originally began after Coleen posted a tweet in October 2019, accusing Rebekah of leaking private information Sun. Explaining that after “a few years” she realized someone following her private Instagram account was sharing “so much information” about her life, Coleen revealed she had come up with a plan to find out who was responsible.
“To try to prove it, I came up with an idea,” she wrote. “I have blocked everyone from viewing my stories except for ONE account.”

Recalling how she shared fake stories to see if they would show up Sun, Coleen then concluded: “I have saved and taken screenshots of all the original stories which clearly show that only one person has viewed them. It is………….Rebecca Vardy’s account.”
Resulting in a complete denial from Rebecca, Jamie Vardy’s wife then escalated the case to the High Court, announcing that she was suing Coleen for defamation.

However, in July 2022 Rebekah lost her defamation case after the judge – Mrs Justice Steyn – found that she had “directed Ms Watt to a private Instagram account, sent her screenshots of Ms Rooney’s posts, drawing attention to items of potential press interest and answering additional questions from the press through Mrs. Watt”.
“Ms Watt” refers to Rebekah’s agent at the time, Caroline Watt, who was believed to be the intermediary between Rebekah and The Sun.
The judge’s statement also added: “In my judgment, it is likely that Ms Vardy deliberately deleted her WhatsApp chat with Ms Watt and that Ms Watt deliberately dropped her phone into the sea.”
Concluding, the judge explained: “I find that Ms Vardy and Ms Watt deliberately erased or destroyed evidence.”
