Looking like a “true story based on lies”, the series describes in detail how wellness influencer Gibson quickly rose to fame on social media, claiming that she was cured of the terminal brain cancer using a healthy lifestyle.

While several elements of true story are dramatized for the series, many characters are based on real people. However, as the show notes, several names have been changed.

One particular character who thinks is based on a real person is Mill Blake (acting Alycia Debnam-Carey). In the series, it serves as a rival of influencer Gibson, as it describes in detail its real journey to attempt to treat cancer with holistic means.

Although Gibson did not have Frereney named Mill Blake in real life, the character is lightly based on a real person with whom influencer has contacted.

The character Mill is slightly inspired by Jessica Ainscough, editor of the Australian teenage magazines that became a wellness entrepreneur after he was diagnosed with a rare cancer at the age of 22.

Similar to the Mill story on the show, Aincough was diagnosed with Sark Epithelioid in 2008 after the biopsy of the lump from the left hand. Her mother eventually died in October 2013, two and a half years after the diagnosis.

Like Milla in the series, Ainscough found love in the middle of her cancer. Although he was named Arlo in the series, Ainscough had a fiancé named Tallon Pamenter at the time of her death. After getting engaged in 2014, the two of them were in the middle of a wedding planning as her cancer got worse.

The character Chanelle is seemingly based on two different characters, Ainscough manager who challenged their friendship and Gibson’s real friend Chanelle McAuliffe, who played a lead role in exposing Gibson’s lies.
