Isabella Rossellini ‘Never’ Saw Adam Sandler on Spaceman Set: ‘I Just Talked to a Screen’ (Exclusive)

Isabella Rossellini and Adam Sandler could share the screen Spacebut the two were never in the same place at once.

Rossellini reminisced about working on the Netflix film while speaking with PEOPLE on A problem solver premiere on Tuesday.

“Well, we were working under Covid. So it was a bit stressful because we had to be in isolation a lot,” she says. “I had a scene with Adam Sandler, but because he was in space in the movie, I never saw him. I just talked to his screen, because they tried to separate people back then, too.”

The actress says it was an “unusual way to shoot” but the film is “pretty good.”

The film focuses on the story of Jakub Prochazka (Sandler), an astronaut who “realizes that the marriage he abandoned may not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth” six months into a lonely research mission.

During his mission, he encounters a creature named Hanus (voiced by Paul Dano) who works with him “to figure out what went wrong before it’s too late.” Carey Mulligan plays his wife and Rossellini his commander.

When asked how Space compares it to some of her other roles, she tells PEOPLE that she sees the job as the same whether it’s a “big movie or a small one.”

Adam Sandler jokes that his daughters still don’t want to talk to him even after he casts them in his movies: ‘They’re doing their own thing’

“When you work with people, it’s the same. You know, it’s really a talent,” she says. “You know, you might get paid more or less, but the actual job – in Julio’s movie I was just a voice-over, so I was never on the set. I went to say hello one day, maybe on the sets, they don’t have that many people. But me working among the actors or listening [the] the director is the same regardless of whether it is a big or a small film.”

In a previous interview with Netflix, Mulligan revealed that she watched all of Sandler’s movies before starting work on the film.

“I never met him. I didn’t meet him until I got to Prague to shoot the movie. Everyone said he was the best, but he really was,” she said. “I loved every day I spent with him, as well as every day I acted with him.”
