Jack Posobiec News
The newest conservative media figure to obtain White House access from the Trump administration is a far-right online activist from the United States who is credited with being the one to first share on Twitter stolen emails from centrist Emmanuel Macron’s French presidential campaign.
Tuesday’s daily press briefing was attended by Jack Posobiec, a Washington-based writer for Rebel Media, a Canadian online platform for political and social news commentary. Posobiec later broadcast a video from the White House grounds with supportive commentary on President Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey.
Posobiec told Reuters that he applied for a permanent permit after initially receiving temporary credentials from the White House in early April. An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by the White House.
Since the disclosure of Macron’s emails, cyber security professionals, minority party Democrats, and some U.S. intelligence officials have expressed increasing concern about possible connections between Russian organizations, including its spy agencies, and far-right media figures in the United States who they suspect were involved in Russian attempts to influence elections.
This week, two U.S. intelligence officials told Reuters that they were more and more certain that Russian government-connected hackers meddled in the French election.
On Sunday, Macron easily defeated the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, who supported Russian policy in Ukraine and wants to expel France from the European Union.
The 2016 campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was hacked, and U.S. intelligence services have concluded that this was done as part of a Russian-backed effort to help Republican contender Donald Trump win the presidency. Russia has denied hacking into or interfering with the French or American elections.
Posobiec revealed to Reuters that he shared information on the Macron leaks that he discovered on the social media platform 4chan using his Twitter account. He denied being associated with the far-right media in a private Twitter conversation and insisted he had no ties to the Russian government.
Posobiec used the hashtag #MacronLeaks on Twitter first, according to security researchers, just after roughly 10 GB of data were released on Pastebin, a website that permits anonymous document sharing.
William Craddick, the creator and executive editor of Disobedient Media, and Posobiec are friends on social media. According to Chris Doman, a British researcher with cyber security company AlienVault, the two appeared to anticipate the Macron disclosures.
According to Doman, Prosobiec and Craddick started dropping indications on Twitter on Friday that a sizable cache of leaked Macron documents would be forthcoming. 22 minutes prior to the upload to Pastebin, Disobedient Media tweeted warning users to “Fully Prepare for a massive leak on Emmanuel Macron and his close connections. Folks, this is a serious deal.
The press access given to Posobiec is the most recent to a prominent member of the alt-right, a loosely organized movement that supports right-wing ideals including white nationalism.
Credentials have also been granted to Mike Cernovich, who had a sizable internet following and managed a website with pro-Trump and anti-Clinton content.
Posobiec’s tweets have been encouraged by Roger Stone, a steadfast supporter of Trump, at least since late September. Cernovich has also received a lot of support from Stone.
For tweeting that WikiLeaks had damaging Clinton campaign emails before the anti-secrecy group revealed them, Stone has drawn criticism. Stone reportedly had an impact on Trump’s decision to fire Comey, according to CNN on Tuesday. Trump claimed that the information was untrue.
Lawyer and media celebrity Ezra Levant created the Canadian conservative website Rebel Media in February 2015 as a subscription-based business. (Mark Hosenball, Joseph Menn, Eric Auchard, Morgan Sharp, and Dustin Volz contributed to the reporting; Jonathan Weber and Grant McCool edited it.)
