Jamie Christopher, Assistant Director on ‘Harry Potter’ and Marvel Movies, Dead at 52: ‘One of the All-Time Greats’

Jamie Christopher, a longtime Hollywood assistant director who has worked on films ranging from Harry Potter series to superhero movies and Knives out, died. He was 52 years old.

Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that Christopher died at his home of heart complications. The director started in Hollywood in the late 1980s and worked as an assistant director on the 1999 Mummyevery movie in the main Harry Potter series i The Bourne Ultimatum, among others. He joined Marvel Studios in 2013 for the sequel Thor: The Dark World. Christopher was recently awarded first assistant director for his work on this year’s film Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniaaccording to his IMDb page.

Screenwriter and director Rian Johnson, with whom Christopher worked on the film in 2017. Star Wars: The Last Jedi and in 2019 Knives outshared a statement on Instagram Thursday calling Christopher “one of the best advertisers and a good friend.”

“What made Jamie so special was his love for the process and history of filmmaking, but even more than that, it was his love for his crew,” Johnson, 49, wrote in the caption of his post. Photos in the director’s carousel show Christopher on set Knives out and The Last Jedi, as well as his picture with the late Carrie Fisher. “A great AD controls the set not by shouting through a megaphone but by earning the love and respect of the team. Jamie was one of the greatest of all time. We lost him too soon.”

Knives out Cast members Jamie Lee Curtis, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford all commented on Johnson’s post, with Langford writing, “Can’t believe it…what a legend ❤️.” Aaron Paul also offered his condolences, writing: “Sorry my friend. Sending so much love.❤️”

Christopher, who also worked as first assistant director in 2014 Guardians of the Galaxythe director of that film, James Gunn, recalled.

“It’s been a sad few days,” Gunn, 57, wrote on Instagram. “The film industry has lost one of our great talents and friends, Jamie Christopher. Jamie was the first assistant director on Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Avengers and many others. He was a true director – a craftsman – who was able to add creatively to the film and, just as importantly, come up with incredibly inventive ways to make it happen. He was also a friend, always there with a sly comment under his breath, a hearty laugh or an amazing story about a day on set. A warm-hearted man who earned the respect of the director, producers, actors and most importantly the crew that worked for him. Everyone loved him and so do I and will I miss him. Rest in peace old friend. The world won’t be as sweet without you. ”

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in each of the eight Harry Potter movies, Christopher recalled in a post on Instagram.

“Jamie Christopher was one of the faces I most looked forward to seeing every day in the Harry Potter films,” Felton, 35, wrote in the caption of his post. “He always kept the spirits up on set, was incredibly cheeky and a brilliant assistant director. We will miss him dearly. I love you my friend and thank you for everything.”

Christopher is survived by his wife Carly and their children Killeon and Jasmine, per Diversity. Deadline also notes that the director leaves behind three children from his previous marriage, Stella, Teddy and Phoebe.
