Jamie Foxx Says He Will Share Details of His Medical Scare in an Upcoming Comedy Special: ‘It Was Dire Straits’

Jamie Foxx is finally ready to share details about his medical emergency, nearly a year after his health scare.

On Sunday, the African American Film Critics Association held its annual luncheon honoring black excellence at the 7th Annual AAFCA Special Achievement Awards.

While accepting the AAFCA Producers Award for his company Foxxhole Productions, the Oscar winner, 56, reflected on how much more grateful he is since recovering from a medical complication that occurred on April 11, 2023, while he was in Atlanta filming the movie Back in action.

“I’m so grateful and I’m getting emotional because it’s out of the box,” he said, telling everyone to “appreciate life” and their loved ones. “I had some people in my life who really made sure I was here because it was tough.”

“Everybody wants to know what happened, and I’m going to tell you what happened, but I have to do it my way,” he added, sharing that he will finally discuss his health journey in an upcoming stand-up comedy special.

Back in December, Foxx also opened up about his health concerns in an emotional speech at the Critics Choice Association Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements in Los Angeles.

“I want to thank everyone. I went through something. I’ve been through some stuff,” Foxx said while accepting the Vanguard Award for his performance in the Burial. “It’s crazy, I couldn’t do it six months ago. In fact, I couldn’t even walk…” he added as he was overcome with emotion.

Showing his appreciation for life, Foxx said: “It feels good to be here. I appreciate every minute now. It’s different. It’s different.”

“I wouldn’t wish what I went through even on my worst enemy, because it’s hard when it’s almost… When it’s almost over, when you see the tunnel,” he said then.

On April 12, 2023, Foxx’s daughter Corinne released a statement on Instagram revealing that the actor was recovering after dealing with a “medical complication” the day before.

“We wanted to share that my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday,” Corinne shared in a statement written on behalf of the Foxx family.

“Thankfully, thanks to quick action and great care, he is already on the road to recovery. We know how much he is loved and we appreciate your prayers,” the statement said. “The family requests privacy during this time.”

Foxx broke his silence on the subject for the first time on May 3, taking to Instagram to share the news and thank his followers for their support. Shortly after, his daughter gave another update on Foxx’s health, revealing that he had been released from the hospital and was “on the mend.”

Since then, Foxx has made several public appearances. According to a source, the actor even threw a party to celebrate his recovery.

“I’m finally starting to feel like myself… it’s been an unexpectedly dark journey… but I’m seeing the light…” Foxx told his fans on Instagram in August 2023.
