Janet Jackson Promotes Right-Wing Kamala Harris Conspiracy Theory, Falsely Claims Harris Is 'Not Black'

Janet Jackson is talking about the upcoming US presidential election — and repeating a false claim about Vice President Kamala Harris.

When asked what she thought about Harris, 59, possibly becoming the first black woman elected president, the Grammy winner, 58, said The Guardian that she “heard” that the vice president “isn’t Black.”

“Well, you know what they allegedly said? She’s not black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian,” Jackson told the British paper.

Although Guard journalist Nosheen Iqbal dismissed Jackson’s claim, which was spread by former President Donald Trump and right-wing political pundits, the singer said of Harris: “Her father is white.”

“That’s what they told me. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a couple of days,” Jackson continued. “I’m told they discovered her father is White.”

Jackson also said she’s not sure if “America is ready” for a woman of color as president, as The Guard put it on

– I don’t know – she said. “Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, honestly don’t know. I think it’s going to be chaos either way.”

“I think there could be chaos,” Jackson added. – It goes anyway, but we’ll have to see.

Media reports, including CNN, the Associated Press and Reuters, have proven these claims about Harris’ race and ethnicity to be false.

Harris’ father, Donald J. Harris, is an immigrant from Jamaica who moved to the US to study economics at the University of California, Berkeley. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, came to the US from India and also studied at Berkeley, where the couple met.

In July, Trump, 78, made false claims about Harris’ race at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago.

“She was always of Indian descent and she was just promoting Native American heritage,” Trump claimed at the time. “I didn’t know she was black until a few years ago when she accidentally became black and now she wants to be known as black. So I don’t know if she’s Native American or if she’s black?”

“But you know what, I respect anybody, I respect anybody, but she obviously doesn’t, because she was Native American through and through, and then all of a sudden she made a U-turn, and she went—she became black. person,” Trump continued.

After Trump repeated the allegations against Harris at the Sept. 10 presidential debate, the vice president said, “Frankly, I think it’s a tragedy that we have somebody who wants to be president who has consistently, throughout his career, tried to use race to divide the American people. ”

Harris attended Howard University, an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), and in his story about Jackson, The Guard quoted a line from Harris’ 2019 memoir The truths we holdin which she wrote, “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters.”

Harris’ White House biography also notes that she is “the first woman, the first black American, and the first South Asian American” to be elected vice president.
