Jeff Dunham was born in Dallas, Texas on April 18, 1962. At the age of three months, he was adopted by Howard Dunham, a real estate appraiser, and Joyce. His interest in ventriloquism began when his parents gave him a Mortimer Snerd and a guide for Christmas. Jeff stated in an interview that he still has the same gift and is dead to him. Jeff decided in the fourth grade that he would be the best ventriloquist and began studying Edgar Bergen.

As a teenager, Dunham began his career as a stage performer.
