Jelly Roll Clarifies He Likely Won’t Be ‘Running’ His Upcoming 5K: ‘Probably a Brisk Power Walk’ (Exclusive)

Jelly Roll is committed to its upcoming 5K.

After announcing last month that he had started training for the 5K, the country star tells PEOPLE that he stayed true to his word and walked almost constantly to work until the 3.1 miles required for the race.

“It’s going really well, man,” Jelly, 39, tells PEOPLE of his 5K training in an interview about his Uber Eats Super Bowl commercial. “This is the first week in six weeks that I haven’t racked up my miles just because Grammys week was so hard, but I’m going to the sauna.”

The “Need a Savior” singer (whose real name is Jason DeFord) has been on a health journey and says his “ultimate goal for the 5K” is to lose a few pounds. “As long as I’m training for this thing, I’m just losing weight. I’ve been eating crazy well, so I’m excited,” he explains.

However, Jelly clarifies that he is not running the 5K race to outdo anyone else. “I don’t know if ‘running’ is the word, but I’m definitely going to run 3.1 miles—probably a brisk walk,” he says. “My goal is to be able to run a 15-minute mile.”

Three months after the race, the Grammy-nominated musician is currently walking a “21-minute mile” pace and plans to “take six minutes off” before the 5K comes around.

Comedians Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura first proposed the idea of a 5K at their 2 Bear 1 Cave podcast last month and recruited fellow entertainers including Michelle Wolf and Stavros Halkias to join them. Then Jelly appeared on Full send podcast, and host Kyle Forgeard also convinced him to participate.

The “Save Me” musician’s wife, Bunnie Xo, will also be joining her husband when the 5K goes down in May — but most likely as a supporter, not a fellow runner.

“Poor thing, she would have to walk so slowly compared to the speed at which she covers 5.1 miles,” jokes Jelly. “For me, a 15-minute mile, [I’m] I’ll tuck him in a bit. It’s a 15-minute walk to Bunnie.”

After his appearance on Full send podcast, Jelly shared a video on Instagram last month taken on one of his morning walks and explained his decision to embark on a 5K.

“Kyle from [comedy troupe] Nelk Boys convinced me that I could make it to the 5K by May if I put my mind to it,” he said at the time. “I believe in him. I believe in myself.”
