Jennifer Hudson Channels Missy Elliott for Talk Show’s Hip-Hop Halloween Episode — Watch (Exclusive)

Jennifer Hudson looks like a soup ass flight!

The EGOT winner, 42, underwent an iconic transformation for her self-titled episode of the daytime talk show for Halloween this year, and PEOPLE was the first to see her in action!

Celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, Hudon is giving viewers a “Hip-Hop Halloween.” And she leads the way by paying tribute to Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott, one of the female rappers who paved the way for women in this genre.

She kicks off the performance, as seen in PEOPLE’s exclusive video, with a lip-synced rendition of Missy’s 1997 hit “The Rain” while wearing an oversized black inflatable jumpsuit — just like Elliott did in the iconic music video.

It didn’t start and stop just on the overalls. With dark lips, Hudson paired her costume with shades that were laced in a shimmering gold headpiece just like Elliott rocked in a late ’90s music video.

The Jennifer Hudson ShowHis cameras even mimicked Elliott’s classic close-up fisheye camera.

Hudson took her performance up a notch with a practiced point, along with several background dancers wearing black jumpsuits with white tops underneath. The set was supported by cyclical silver shapes, also inspired by the video for “The Rain”.

Lil’ Kim, Timbaland, Yo-Yo and other influential artists had cameos in the original music video.

“It’s Hip-Hop Halloween,” Hudson said after her little performance.

Hudson’s television set, which is typically chic, has been transformed into a hip-hop tribute with the show’s title rendered in colorful airbrush on a brick wall. Graffiti and boom boxes also adorned the stage.

“This is how Halloween is celebrated. You already know who I am,” Hudson added as she raised her arms to show off her outfit. The crowd, also dressed up for the occasion, cheered enthusiastically.

“Missy Elliott. Trespass in the house. Look at me,” Hudson continued, joking that she didn’t understand how the star could see through the custom shades.

“You are a true legend. Nobody does it like an original,” said the Respect actress, “Get Ur Freak On” hitmaker.

After deflating her costume just a bit so she could sit down, the host told her audience that Elliott would be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this Friday, making her the first female rapper to do so.

Over the summer, Rolling stone ranked “The Rain” at number one on their list of the 150 greatest music videos of the genre of all time.

Elliott responded to the news with a tweet that included archival behind-the-scenes footage tape of her going to a gas station in New York and inflating her jumpsuit with a tire pump to achieve the look she wanted for the video shoot.

“The suit blew up so bad I couldn’t fit in the car so I had to walk back and out on the street in this outfit in BROOKLYN,” she said on X. “Dem ppl rode like they were high. ”
