Jennifer Hudson Reimagines Whitney Houston's 1994 American Music Awards Look for Tribute Performance

Jennifer Hudson will always remember Whitney Houston.

On October 6, Dream girls star, 43, took the stage to perform a powerful medley, including “I WIll Always Love You,” at the 50th Anniversary American Music Awards Special in LA on Oct. 6.

While the performance was nothing short of stunning, Hudson’s look was just as special, paying homage to the ensemble Houston wore on stage during the 1994 AMAs. The late icon won 22 American Music Awards, including the 1994 Lifetime Achievement Award, during her career.

Styled by Maeve Reilly, Hudson wore a black La Roxx gown with sheer detailing and crystals adorning the neckline and sleeves. She complemented it with dangling earrings.

Houston’s look from 30 years ago had a similar silhouette and featured a loose cape and turtleneck.

Hudson’s hair was styled in a sleek high ponytail by Albert Morrison, while her makeup, done by Adam Burrell, consisted of a smokey eye, heavy lashes and bare lips.

In a video shared on the AMA’s Instagram account, Hudson recalled her earliest memories of Houston, sharing that at age 7 she was “captured by this goddess” whose voice sounded like she was from “heaven.”

About her connection with Bodyguard star, american idol alum said she always resonated with Houston’s “gospel.”

“I don’t think I can remember the time [when] I didn’t know about Whitney,” she added.

Houston died in 2012 at the age of 48. Her death was caused by accidental drowning with heart disease and cocaine use as factors. Her life was recently the focus of a 2022 biopic. Whitney Houston: I want to dance with someonestarring Naomi Ackie.
