On Thursday, Dec. 5, the actress and singer, 55, was honored with the Maverick Award at the 2024 IndieWire Awards at Citizen News in Los Angeles. Lopez received the honor for her sports biopic Unstoppablein which she portrays the role of July Robles, the mother of Anthony Robles, who became a wrestling champion despite being born with one leg.
The “Can’t Get Enough” singer dazzled in silver for the occasion in a shimmering sheer gown with long sleeves and a high neck. She complemented the tight dress with a pair of silver earrings, while her hair was loose.

She said: “This award really has a special place in my heart because the word maverick, and I looked it up, I wanted to have the right definition, okay? It means individualist, non-conformist, free spirit, original, trendsetter, eccentric, outsider, rebel, dissident, disruptor.”
“I could go on, but I won’t. But seriously, how nice to be recognized for charting your own course,” she continued. “I appreciate that they see me in such a way and that they recognize me as I am and as I had to be, because I think that every artist and everyone in this room had to figure out how to do it in their own way, they pave their own way, so I’m honored to be among you .”

Lopez thanked “everyone who made this movie possible” before giving an honorable mention to director William Goldenberg and actors Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale, Don Cheadle and Michael Peña.
“I owe Judy a debt of gratitude,” she said of the real Judy Robles, with thanks to Anthony. “Her openness in sharing her experiences and wisdom before and during filming were invaluable in bringing this film to life and enriching my own journey as an artist and as a wife and mother.”

Lopez’s award comes after her ex Ben Affleck praised her performance in the film he co-produced with Matt Damon through their production company Artists Equity.
“Jennifer is spectacular,” he said as he, Cillian Murphy and Damon spoke to Party tonight about a separate film the group worked on called Little things like these.
“Unstoppable is a very different film than this, but in some ways it is similarly rooted in the passion of really talented artists, and [director] Billy Goldenberg and Jennifer and Don Cheadle and Jharrel [Jerome] and Bobby Cannavale, they were all really passionate about this movie,” Affleck added.
