A century after F. Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada lead the production as Gatsby and Buchanan. The two of them acted The Great Gatsby when the musical had its world premiere at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in the fall of 2023.

PEOPLE: What excites you the most about this production The Great Gatsby?

JORDAN: The sheer scale of the production is really exciting. Before you heard a word, a text or a note, you were already transported into the world. But more than that, I’d say I’m excited about the level of talent we have behind the scenes and on stage. Indeed, everyone is at the top of their game and we are all creating something together with egos aside, aiming to deliver the best version possible The Great Gatsby.

NOBLEZADA: Doing a new show that is going full throttle in all its glamor and splendor is very exciting for me! This company is also so outstanding. I am very grateful to be on this team.

PEOPLE: Your characters are literary icons that most of America knows very well, but this is the first time audiences will hear Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan sing. What effect does it have on the experience The Great Gatsby?

JORDAN: After working on this series, I really don’t see how you can portray these characters without singing! The stakes of these relationships and the layers of emotion they lie beneath create a lush landscape for you to draw from. And setting these kinds of things to music unlocks a whole new set of tools with which to tell a story. You can go much deeper into the minds and hearts of these characters with a song, and there’s a whole world of new things to explore.

NOBLEZADA: Going beyond all the magnificence that the book provides, adding that element of music opens up a new world of magic for this story!

PEOPLE: What was it like working with each other?

JORDAN: We’re always laughing and joking backstage (and maybe onstage sometimes? Sorry!), we really have fun together. As an artist, Eva has the rawest talent I’ve seen in a long time. Watching her connect with her body and character through song is truly a masterclass in musical theater performance.

NOBLEZADA: It’s great to work with every superstar in this lineup! Jeremy is an amazing stage partner and I’m glad we all have such a good time off stage too!

PEOPLE: What was the energy of the crowd at the Paper Mill Playhouse?

JORDAN: It was amazing. They were with us from the moment they stepped into the theater, if not before. It really makes a big difference when you don’t have to actively win them over, when they show up expecting you to like them. However, what I’m most proud of is that for many of those fans, we far exceeded their already high expectations, which is really something else. Makes you feel like you’re doing something good.

NOBLEZADA: Electricity!!! The audience brought the fun to this show, I can tell you the truth! The world premiere was a time that I – and I’m sure everyone who was a part of it – will never forget. Now we’re even more excited to bring it to Broadway audiences!
