Jess Search, a well-known documentary filmmaker and co-founder of the non-profit organization Doc Society, has died at the age of 54 from brain cancer.
She has worked on countless projects, including the Oscar-winning Citizenfour about Edward Snowden, the overfishing documentary The End of the Line, the Virunga gorilla conservation film and the overfishing documentary The End of the Line.
In 2005, Search launched the Britdoc Foundation with the support of Channel 4, where she previously worked as an editor in the documentary department. This eventually changed to the Doc Society, which collaborated and supported documentarians from around the world.
Doc Society’s ability to produce documentaries that address the “twin critical and intertwined issues of climate change and democracies in crisis” was reportedly her final request, according to her collaborators.
In a statement confirming Search’s death, the Doc Society said: “Jess has fully lived through these last few weeks. She responded to the diagnosis with her wit, calling herself the “Lucky Fucker” for living a meaningful life on her own terms.
She persisted in making late-night voice memos, ordering rounds of margaritas, and rallying a diverse group of international allies behind the cause of critical narrative work to change systems to improve the world.
To the dismay of some, she did it all in hot pink Crocs, socks and kibitki, in stark contrast to her signature white suit worn at Good Pitches around the world.
The organization announced that a commemoration for the Search will be scheduled soon.
“Jess leaves a global family that we know will continue to speak out against injustice, challenge the status quo, and live meaningful lives with love in their hearts. She was a beloved partner and parent, a brilliant friend, an industry catalyst, a skilled campaigner, a consummate producer, a supernatural public rallyer, and a mentor to many. We think it’s a happy coincidence that we can stand with all of you.
Producer Kat Mansoor, who worked with Search on films such as Evo Johnny and Krava, claims that the documentary sector has lost a hero. She claimed: “She was genuinely trying to change the terrain that is so difficult to navigate. She had a strong belief in the power of culture and art to effect change.
She has produced notable films with powerful messages that won Oscars and were nominated for Bafta. She fought for them and brought them to fruition. She fought for the industry, and now it’s up to us to pick up the baton and continue making films that inspire and move audiences.
Last month, Search announced her illness, stating that her organization was using an equal power-sharing format and that its operations would continue under the leadership of her five co-chief executives. With a passage from Marcus Aurelius and a list of her favorite songs, she ended by declaring that she is “extremely calm and has literally everything I need.”
She called on the documentary community to “triple down and make rocket boosters for our work together” in her farewell statement. In addition, she called for the creation of a “new, fair and politically protected distribution system of independent media” with the help of distributors, financiers and clients.
According to Search, documentaries have the ability to change the world. She stated, “The world needs more democracy; negotiating a new social agreement between the people and the state, in order to solve the climate problem and implement a just transition. Doc Society focuses on these two extremely important and related topics using what we’ve learned about story strategy over the past 20 years.
Her family, including her boyfriend Beadie Finzi and their children Ella and Ben, were by her side as she passed away quietly on Monday, according to her associates.
