Jessica Simpson and Daughter Maxwell Poke Fun at Her Chicken of the Sea Mishap in New Ad for the Brand (Exclusive)

Yes, folks, she knows it’s tuna.

More than two decades after Jessica Simpson asked the question “Is this a chicken I have or is this a fish?” while eating a bowl of Chicken of the Sea, the actress, singer and fashion designer, 43, stars in a new ad for the company, which PEOPLE can exclusively reveal. The video is part of their “It’s the One For Me” campaign.

Starring alongside daughter Maxwell “Maxi” Drew, 11, Simpson is seen at the start of the ad sitting on a couch with her eldest child.

“Mom, what do you eat in a packet,” Maxwell asks his mother.

“It’s called Chicken of the Sea, but it’s not really chicken — it’s tuna,” she replies. “So don’t let that confuse you.”

As Maxwell asks, “Who would that confuse?” Simpson slyly replies, “Nobody. Not your mom,” before giving an awkward laugh.

Simpson mixed tuna and chicken while eating a bowl of Chicken of the Sea on the 2003 premiere of her reality series, which chronicled her life with now-ex Nick Lachey.

“I know it’s tuna, but it says chicken by the sea,” said the singer of the song “With you” in the episode. “Is that stupid? What is it called — chicken by the sea or in the sea?

Lachey, 50, then gave Simpson a confused look, telling her: “Chicken of the Sea is a brand. You know, because a lot of people eat tuna, just like a lot of people eat chicken. Chicken from the sea.”

“Oh, I understand now. I read it wrong,” she added at the time.

Simpson is now married to husband Eric Johnson and the two share Maxwell and two other children, son Ace Knute, 10, and daughter Birdie Mae, 4.

Along with the new ad, Chicken of the Sea is hosting a “That’s for Me” sweepstakes, which will give consumers a chance to win $10,000.

“It seemed like the perfect fit to partner with our friend Jessica Simpson to share how Chicken of the Sea fits into her busy life as a mother, artist and entrepreneur,” said Griffin Raasch, Director of Marketing at Chicken of the Sea. “Her legendary ‘is it chicken or fish?’ moment is part of the fabric of pop culture, and we had fun working with Jessica to give it new momentum in 2024.”

From now until the end of February, people can visit ChickenoftheSea.com/theoneforme and show how Chicken of the Sea is right for them. All you have to do is send an original photo or video of you enjoying the brand’s product.

“Following the launch of our new tuna and salmon packs, we’re excited to inspire new ways for Chicken of the Sea fans to incorporate lean, flavorful protein into their daily lives and even reward one lucky fan,” added Raasch.
