John Yeager has passed away
John Steven Yeager, 81, passed away on April 14, 2023, ending a life of extraordinary achievement, dedication and service. John S. Yeager was born in Warsaw, Indiana on October 3, 1941. His life story is an inspiring tale of military courage, a successful railroad career, and exceptional service as a federal agent. John grew up in Elkhart, Indiana, where he attended Concord High School and graduated in 1959. He embarked on a journey to attend George Washington University, Tri-State College and Oakland University, eager to pursue higher education and pave the way for his future aspirations.
John enlisted in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and served his country serving 18 months of his four-year tour with the 1st Marine Airlift Wing, stationed in Southeast Asia and the Far East. His employment with the Department of Communications and top secret clearance speak to his devotion to duty and commitment to national security. John started his career in the railway industry before joining the army and returning there after his term. His first job in industry was as a brakeman at the New York Central plant in Elkhart, Indiana, which laid the foundation for his successful career. After his military service, he moved to the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, where he rose through the ranks and eventually held eight different management positions.
John served as Chief Operations Superintendent of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad until his retirement in 1993. Discouraged by his retirement, he began a new career as a federal agent with the Federal Railroad Administration and the US Department of Transportation. He received multiple accolades and accolades for his outstanding performance in this role, including the prestigious “Top Achievement Award”. His career in federal service ended during a ceremony in Washington, DC, where he was presented with the Federal Railroad Administration Administrator’s Outstanding Achievement Award. After many years of dedicated service, John retired from FRA in 2002.
