Julianne Hough is opening up about her sexuality more than five years after revealing she’s “not straight.”
On Tuesday, August 27, Dancing with the stars host, 36, appeared on The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast to describe how her life has changed since 2019 Women’s health a story where she came out as part of the LGBTQ+ community.
“Coming out is one of the most vulnerable and powerful things you can do,” Hough told host Jamie Kern Lima. “I think for me it was very similar — it’s not about being straight or gay or bi or queer. It’s more about, ‘I think I’m just learning what love is and I love people and I don’t know what I’m attracted to, but I choose you.’ ”
“I started seeing people and seeing their hearts and seeing their beauty and their essence come through in a way that I thought, ‘Wow, I love people,'” she continued. “And I don’t know if it’s sexual attraction or ‘this’ attraction, but I’m just seeing people. And that was such a nice discovery, too.”

In August 2019, Hough opened up to Women’s health about her relationship with NHL player Brooks Laich, now her ex-husband. At the time, she revealed that she was on a journey of self-discovery and talked about how coming out to her husband gave them a “more intimate relationship.”
“I [told him]’You know I’m not straight, right?’ And he said, ‘I’m sorry for what?’ “, she explained then. “I was like, ‘I’m not. But I choose to be with you.’ ”
“I think there’s a safety with my husband now that I’m unpacking all of this,” Hough continued, “and there’s no fear of saying things that I was afraid to admit or felt ashamed or guilty about because of what I was told or how I was raised. ”
Shortly after the publication of the article, the professional dancer opened an interview with Extrasharing how she has felt supported and loved by the public and her friends and family since coming out.
“I feel really lucky, and a lot of people who don’t have the platform or the support that I have aren’t that lucky,” she said in August 2019. “So I just want to say that I’m super thankful for my family, my friends, and the support from all my fans that I have had, but also to extend it to people who do not have such support.”

Since Hough parted ways with Laich in 2020, The Dancing with the stars pro was candid about their relationship struggles, telling Dax Shepard in the episode Armchair expert earlier this month that “we definitely accept what happened, but we’re sad that it didn’t work out because I’ve only dated great human beings.”

“I feel that our relationship and our marriage was just right, and the ending is right,” she explained. “We both regret that it didn’t work out because I don’t think we had the maturity to come together.”
