Upcoming documentary Paramount+ June is set to explore the life and career of June Carter Cash, the iconic country singer-songwriter and second wife of Johnny Cash.
Ahead of the film’s January 16 airing, the trailer was released on Wednesday.
Directed by Emmy Award-winning documentarian Kristen Vaurio, the short teaser offers a look at archival footage featured in the film, a first look at the A-list talking heads and asks the film’s central question, “Who is June Carter Cash?” — given her many accomplishments and how she often lived in the shadow of her husband’s celebrity.

“Who is June Carter Cash?” country singer Kacey Musgraves asks at the start of the trailer. “Well, first of all, she’s a bad bitch.”
The clip further teases how the documentary charts her rise in music, from her early days performing in her family’s Americana group The Carters to working with Cash and writing one of his biggest hits, “Ring of Fire.”

According to the trailer, June recounts how the “Keep on the Sunny Side” singer and the “I Walk the Line” singer met — with an old video of Carter Cash telling the story herself — and chronicles their marriage, which lasted from 1968 until their deaths in 2003 .

“She was tough and funny. If you’re married to Johnny Cash, you have to be strong,” says Willie Nelson, who is among the interlocutors, at one point.
According to the press release, June features never-before-seen archival material from the Grammy winner’s entire career, including her period as an actress, as well as rare interviews with the late star (who died in 2003 at the age of 73).
Along with intimate interviews with members of her family, several fellow artists, friends and longtime fans provide commentary. Nelson, Dolly Parton, Ronnie Dunn, Larry Gatlin, her co-star in the 1997 film. Apostle Robert Duvall and Reese Witherspoon — who won an Oscar for her role in 2005. To walk the line — they all appear.

While the “Tall Lover Man” singer and the Man in Black collaborated throughout their marriage, releasing four studio albums and often touring together, Carter Cash also had a prolific solo career. Not only did her fame with The Carters predate their marriage, she released four solo albums — two of which won Grammys — was posthumously inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2009 and, among other accomplishments, remains an inspiration to women in the country.
June debuts on Paramount+ on Tuesday, January 16.
