Kacey Musgraves Wanted New ‘Deeper Well’ Candle to Smell Like ‘Hugging Someone Familiar’

Kacey Musgraves’ latest project is well lit.

The singer-songwriter lets it burn again with the launch of her “Deeper Well” candle with Boy Smells, her second collaboration with the beloved brand following her hugely successful 2020 release “Slow Burn,” which is still a top seller.

Drawing inspiration from her new single of the same name, “Deeper Well” is about returning to nature, its healing properties and finding peace in one’s own environment.

And to hear Musgraves tell it, fragrance is also a reflection of where she is in her life.

“This is definitely my most down-to-earth period so far. Now I’m 35 years old and I know myself better than in previous years, previous albums, and I just feel like I’m exactly where I need to be,” the Grammy winner, whose fifth album is out on March 15, says PEOPLE. “I definitely think the music and hopefully the fragrance will reflect that.”

For Musgraves, turning her songs into fragrances is a way to offer her fans “a more 3D experience.”

“It’s really fun for me to think about taking something from one dimension of a song and extending it to other senses, like smell,” she shares. “Songs are associated with memories, and smell is one of the main things that trigger people’s memories. I think mixing and creating a world where a song can have a life as a smell is so much fun.”

Musgraves and Boy Smells latest interpretation of sound into fragrance, available now exclusively at BoySmells.com and kaceymusgraves.com, combines earthy notes of mushroom, beetroot, oakmoss with the freshness of eucalyptus, raspberry and lavender. In April, the $56 candle will launch in retail stores worldwide, including Sephora, SpaceNK and Nordstrom.

“This scent is very airy, but it’s also really earthy. It’s like heaven, but it’s also dirt. It has a lot of earthy elements, but there’s also a more sophisticated gourmand perfume element. It’s somewhere between feminine and masculine, but it’s calm,” he says. Musgraves for PEOPLE. “There’s a calmness to it. There’s a sweetness that kind of reminds me of childhood. But I was also inspired to create a scent that felt like you were hugging someone famous who just came from outside, and you’re smelling them, you’re also smelling outer space and it’s still on them. I feel like the smell really gives it to me.”

So where is the best place for lighting? Musgraves sees her candle as a great excuse to take care of herself.

“I think after a long, hard day you come in and meditate, take a hot bath and burn the ‘Deeper Well,'” she shares.

For the Boy Smells team, the re-collaboration with the singer was not only organic, but also “magical”.

“We’ve been nurturing this project for the past nine months, and it’s finally time to share it with the world,” co-founder Matthew Herman tells PEOPLE, adding that Deeper Well is the first time the giant has taken a deep dive into “very earthy natural fragrances.”

“Kacey lives in a space of authenticity. She’ll bare her soul, even if it’s a little hair-raising. To me, she’s redefining the genre,” Herman says. “She also has great taste and is a pleasure to work with. Our partnership is purely organic. It’s not like we’re working through agents and managers. We send messages, voice reminders and meet to review a project every time we’re in the same city.”

The feeling for Musgraves is completely mutual.

“Boy Smells is iconic,” she tells PEOPLE. “They’ve established themselves in pop culture in a wonderful way. I think they just make unique scents. They’re having fun with it. They don’t take themselves too seriously, but they know their shit and the packaging is beautiful, which is obviously a bonus.”

As for her upcoming record, Musgraves said she knew “instantly” after recording “Deeper Well” that it was the title of her record.

“Ultimately, the song sums up where I am in my mid-30s and really evaluating what love means to me, what friendships mean to me, what are the things that I need, what’s really important to me, what works for me, what doesn’t work for me, and take that into account and make room for the things that are really important. This life is so short. I think you have to be a little bit ruthless about removing obstacles to growth.”
