Kate McKinnon Pokes Fun at Pete Davidson’s Dating Life in Hellmann’s Super Bowl Commercial (Exclusive)

Kate McKinnon has the best actresses in Super Bowl commercials: a Saturday night live friend and cat!

Earlier this month, PEOPLE revealed that the actress is the celebrity featured in this year’s 2024 Hellmann’s Super Bowl ad. McKinnon, 40, talked to PEOPLE about what it’s like to land the ad — which includes a cameo as the star of last year’s Hellmann’s Super Bowl, Pete Davidson.

“It was so much fun. I’ve always wanted to do a Super Bowl commercial and I was thrilled to get a commercial that has a positive social message and also one that includes cats,” she says.

In the 30-second ad above — which will air during the Super Bowl on Feb. 11 — Hellmann’s promotes tackling food waste with the help of McKinnon’s fictional cat, Mayo Cat.

“Leftover chicken, spring onions, cheese. What am I going to do with this?” ex SNL the star asks as she opens the fridge.

In response, her cat says and answers “mayo,” with a drawn-out meow. McKinnon, clearly in shock, looks at the jar of Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and exclaims, “Can you talk?”

From there, her adorable kitty experiences mega fame. McKinnon follows her on the morning show where Mayo Cat says “mayo” once more and McKinnon recounts the story of how “Hellmann saved the leftovers.”

The montage also includes a dynamic duo at a book signing. “She can’t spell,” McKinnon jokes. Mayo Cat then appears on stage as the speaker at the Black Tie event with a hilarious sign that reads “May-Ow.”

In perhaps the funniest scene of the ad, Davidson walks the red carpet holding a cat. “Is it serious?” – ask the journalists, insinuating that they are hanging out. Davidson cheekily nodded and smiled.

The moment then cuts back to a quiet moment in the kitchen with McKinnon and the cat. “Mayo Cat Dumps Davidson!” the fake PEOPLE cover reads. The comedian hilariously admits to her pet: “You lasted longer than most.” Mayo Cat naturally responds, “Mayo.”

There were a few highlights during the shoot of the commercial, McKinnon tells PEOPLE, but being reunited with Davidson was a big plus.

“I love Pete and whenever me and my colleagues see each other, it’s just an instant feeling of warmth and family and ‘Oh my God, my brother, how are you?'” she says. “He’s so sweet and great and it’s been so much fun.”

When it comes to working with Mayo Cat, whose real name is Chipmunk, McKinnon gives rave reviews. “The chemistry between me and the squirrel, it’s romance. It’s a romantic commercial,” he jokes about the squirrels, who were in the company of cat trainer Tina Weld.

The role is a perfect fit for Barbie star. Not only is McKinnon a cat owner herself, she also has one of her most famous cats SNL sketches is one that places Barbara DeDrew, a cat woman and owner of a cat rescue.

The only problem is that McKinnon’s cat, Nino, might get mad about the ad.

“I think he sensed what I was up to that day and was a bit jealous at the end of the day. I can’t let him watch it. I won’t let him watch it,” she laughed. “I’ll watch happily and then when the commercial comes on I’ll send Nino out of the room so he doesn’t have a fit and say who the hell is that?”

The ad encourages viewers to “taste, not waste” and avoid prematurely throwing away perfectly usable food. McKinnon, an active composter, is proud to promote the message.

“It was such an accurate version of me in the script, just like I really care about not wasting and I really care about the country,” she says. “I’m also just — I’m obsessed with cats and I’m obsessed with my cat. And so to be given that opportunity, I just said, ‘Oh, I don’t really have to do anything. Only these are my loves.’ It was amazing.”
